How to improve FPS in Resident Evil Requiem (PC)

Resident Evil Requiem is Capcom's new mainline entry built on RE Engine, the same engine behind the RE2, RE3, and RE4 remakes and Village. It keeps the formula that has made RE Engine famous on PC: great graphical fidelity with surprisingly contained resource use, prioritizing skin shaders and photorealistic lighting over raw polygon count. Being a more ambitious entry, it adds more aggressive ray tracing options and less linear scenarios than its predecessors, which raises the demand on the GPU. The good news is that, as with the rest of the series, the engine remains relatively CPU-light, so almost all the room for improvement is in the graphics settings. This guide covers the settings that most impact performance without sacrificing the horror atmosphere that defines the game.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +51% free FPS.

Ray Tracing Reflections

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: The community agrees it's only worth turning on with an RTX 4070 or higher if you're aiming for stable 60 fps.
+18% FPS

Ray-traced reflections on wet floors and metallic surfaces are Requiem's visual trademark, but they're also the game's biggest frame eater. Disabling them replaces the reflections with RE Engine's traditional rasterized solution.

Volumetric Fog

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Highly recommended as a first step; the visual difference between Medium and Ultra goes almost unnoticed in motion.
+12% FPS

Volumetric fog cutting through light shafts in basements and forests is pure RE Engine, but on Ultra it multiplies the cost of every dynamic light source. Dropping it to Medium preserves the oppressive atmosphere.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: One of the settings with the best ratio of fps gained to fidelity lost.
+10% FPS

Dynamic shadows for characters and objects use high-resolution shadow maps on Ultra, a setting that especially penalizes mid-range GPUs. High keeps sharp contours in cutscenes.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to lower it one notch; the visual impact is minimal compared to the performance savings.

Ambient occlusion reinforces contact between objects and walls in the game's gothic interiors. The Ultra version uses a wider sampling radius that's barely noticeable except in zoomed-in screenshots.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Turning it off is nearly unanimous among competitive players and those who prioritize visual clarity.
+3% FPS

Motion blur doesn't free up many frames on its own, but it reduces post-processing load and improves perceived sharpness during fast camera turns.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Lowering from Ultra to High frees up VRAM with no noticeable loss except in extreme close-ups.

RE Engine manages textures via VRAM streaming. High keeps skin and material detail without risking Ultra's streaming stutters on cards with 8GB or less.

Mesh Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended to keep at High except on flagship GPUs.
+7% FPS

Controls the geometric detail level of characters and environments, especially relevant in this entry's more open areas compared to previous remakes' corridor design.

Anti-Aliasing (TAA/DLAA)

Recommended: TAA · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Use DLAA only if your GPU has performance to spare; in every other case, TAA is the recommended balance.

DLAA offers the best image sharpness on RTX cards but has a higher performance cost than RE Engine's standard TAA.

Global Illumination

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: High · Consensus: This is the setting with the biggest visual impact in this group, so only lower it if you urgently need extra fps.

Global illumination controls how light bounces between surfaces, a key element in Requiem's dark atmosphere. On Ultra it enables extra ray bounces that are costly.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS 3

+45% FPS

DLSS 3 with Frame Generation is available on RTX 40-series GPUs and offers the game's biggest performance jump, especially useful for sustaining 60fps with ray tracing enabled.

AMD FSR 2/3

+35% FPS

FSR works on any GPU, including older generations and NVIDIA cards. FSR 3 adds frame generation on compatible AMD GPUs.

Intel XeSS

+30% FPS

XeSS offers a good middle ground in image quality and is available on both Intel Arc GPUs and NVIDIA/AMD cards.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Resizable BAR from the BIOS and confirm it in the NVIDIA control panel to gain several extra FPS in the most geometry-heavy scenes.
  • •Use DLAA only on an RTX 4070 Ti or higher if you want ray tracing plus DLSS Frame Generation without dropping below 60fps.
  • •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers before playing.

AMD

  • •On RX 6000/7000 cards, prioritize lowering Volumetric Fog and Global Illumination before render resolution.
  • •Enable FSR 3 with frame generation on RX 7000 to offset the higher cost of ray-traced reflections if you decide to keep them on.
  • •Check that Smart Access Memory is enabled alongside Resizable BAR to maximize bandwidth to VRAM.

  • •Install the game on an NVMe SSD drive: RE Engine's texture streaming suffers noticeably on mechanical disks.
  • •Reserve at least 16GB of free RAM and close background applications.
  • •Update Windows with the latest DirectX 12 Ultimate updates, a requirement for ray tracing.

Crashes from shader corruption on first launch

As with previous RE Engine releases, the first shader compilation can cause unexpected crashes if the process is interrupted.

On GPUs with 8GB of VRAM or less, combining Ultra textures with ray tracing enabled can cause sharp FPS drops from memory saturation.

Occasional stuttering when generating the DLSS 3 frame graph

Some RTX 40-series users report brief microcuts during the first few minutes of play when enabling frame generation.

Do I need a ray tracing-capable GPU to play Resident Evil Requiem well?▾
It's not essential. The game runs perfectly fine with ray-traced reflections disabled, using RE Engine's rasterized solution, which is still visually solid.
