How to improve FPS in Elden Ring Nightreign (PC)

Elden Ring Nightreign inherits Elden Ring's proprietary engine, so it carries the same technical quirks: FPS locked at 60 and shader-compilation micro-stutter. The difference is pacing: roughly 40-minute expeditions with up to 3 players, a storm constantly pushing you into new zones, and night bosses with very dense particle effects that are where the biggest frame-time drops show up. This guide covers the settings that actually change the experience, since the graphics menu barely moves performance compared to the CPU and the SSD.

⚠️ Known for: A hard 60 FPS cap with forced V-Sync (no in-game option to disable it) and 20-50ms micro-stuttering inherited directly from the Elden Ring engine, present even on high-end rigs during exploration and during zone transitions when the storm closes in.

Display Mode

Recommended: Fullscreen · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: The Steam community confirms fewer stutters in Fullscreen than in Borderless Windowed, though on laptops with multiple monitors Borderless is still more convenient.

Exclusive fullscreen mode reduces input latency and avoids stutter spikes that do show up in Borderless, especially noticeable when opening the map or during night storm transitions.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: It's the setting with the best FPS-to-visual-impact ratio according to several settings guides, practically unanimous.

The dynamic shadows of the three players and the night enemy hordes are among the most expensive scenes to render. Dropping from High to Medium frees up GPU with no relevant visual change during the expeditions' frantic pace.

Volumetric Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Clear consensus: the visual jump from Low to High isn't worth the cost, especially on RTX 3060/4060 and AMD equivalents.

The storm's volumetric fog enveloping the map and the fog effects in caves look good on Low and are among the heaviest scenes for mid-range GPUs.

Hyper-Threading / SMT

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A recurring recommendation on technical PC forums (Windows Forum, PCGuide) for those experiencing stutter even with stable 60 FPS.

The engine doesn't distribute work well across logical threads, and on some Intel/AMD CPUs disabling Hyper-Threading or SMT reduces micro-stutter in zones with many enemies and simultaneous effects.

Overlays and background recording

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A standard troubleshooting step cited in nearly every performance guide for the game.

Discord, GeForce Experience/NVIDIA App, Steam Overlay, and recording software add extra micro-hitches on top of an engine that already suffers from its own stutter; disabling them is one of the first things the community recommends trying.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: The impact on raw FPS is low, but it's key to avoiding frametime spikes on cards with little VRAM.

Matches texture quality to your GPU's actual VRAM: on 8GB cards or less, dropping to Medium avoids texture-streaming stutter when switching biomes within the expedition.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A secondary setting recommended after the quick wins, with modest but consistent gains.
+4% FPS

Ambient occlusion indoors and in the Wandering Interregnum's ruins has a moderate cost; Medium keeps contact shadow contrast without penalizing performance as much as High.

Reflections

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended in settings guides aimed at maintaining a stable 60 FPS on mid-range hardware.
+5% FPS

Puddles and wet surfaces during the storm use screen reflections that cost more than they add in fast three-player fights; Low is the sweet spot.

Grass/Vegetation Density

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A smaller gain but one that stacks with the other environment settings.
+3% FPS

Vegetation density in the cyclical map's outdoor zones affects performance when the storm pushes players through open fields with enemies.

Motion Blur / Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A near-unanimous change among competitive players, more for visual clarity than performance.
+2% FPS

Neither adds relevant FPS but they do reduce perceived clarity in night boss fights, where tracking the boss's movement is critical.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

No native DLSS/FSR

Nightreign doesn't include DLSS, FSR, or frame generation in-game as of today: FromSoftware keeps the same "no extras" port as base Elden Ring. There's no upscaling menu to enable in-game.

NVIDIA App Smooth Motion (driver-level)

+45% FPS

On RTX 50 GPUs, the NVIDIA App's Smooth Motion feature generates frames at the driver level and lets you break the 60 FPS cap up to 120. It's not classic DLSS and adds some latency, but it's the only official frame-generation route.

Lossless Scaling (LSFG 3.0, third-party)

+35% FPS

The Lossless Scaling app lets you force x2 frame generation (WGC capture, sync disabled, queue target 0) to smooth the game beyond its native cap; it works on any GPU but is an unofficial solution.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable exclusive fullscreen mode and force V-Sync from the NVIDIA panel in addition to the game's own setting to reduce tearing without disabling the engine's forced sync.
  • •If you have an RTX 50, try Smooth Motion from the NVIDIA App to break the 60 FPS cap; it's not available on RTX 40 or lower, where you'll need Lossless Scaling instead.
  • •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers: FromSoftware usually coordinates stability patches with NVIDIA around its game launches.

AMD

  • •With no native FSR in the game, use Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) at the driver level if you want more sharpness with reduced render load.
  • •Radeon Anti-Lag can help offset some of the latency added by the engine's forced V-Sync.
  • •On Ryzen CPUs with SMT, try disabling it if you notice persistent micro-stutter despite holding a stable 60 FPS.

Intel

  • •On Arc, install the latest drivers: Elden Ring Nightreign support has improved notably since launch, but it's still behind NVIDIA/AMD in frame-time stability.
  • •On Intel CPUs with E/P cores, disabling Hyper-Threading or pinning affinity to the P cores can reduce hitching in zones with many simultaneous enemies.
  • •Watch package temperatures on laptops: the engine demands single-thread CPU bursts that trigger thermal throttling in thin chassis.

Sistema

  • •Install the game on an SSD (NVMe if possible): texture loads when switching biomes within an expedition are much more aggressive than on an HDD.
  • •Close background processes (overlays, browsers, launchers) before 40-minute expeditions to minimize stutter spikes during critical moments like night bosses.

60 FPS cap with forced V-Sync

The game locks framerate at 60 FPS and forces V-Sync with no option to disable it from the options menu, a direct inheritance from the Elden Ring engine. Breaking the limit requires external tricks like Smooth Motion or Lossless Scaling.

20-50ms micro-stuttering during exploration

Even on high-end rigs (RTX 4090 + Ryzen 9 7950X) hitches of 20 to 50ms have been measured while exploring open zones, tied to the engine and CPU usage rather than the GPU. There's no official patch that fully eliminates it as of this guide.

No native DLSS/FSR/Frame Generation

Unlike other 2025-2026 releases, Nightreign shipped without any built-in upscaling or frame generation, which greatly limits performance options on modest hardware or 1440p/4K displays.

Why is Elden Ring Nightreign capped at 60 FPS?▾
Because it uses the same FromSoftware proprietary engine as base Elden Ring, with V-Sync built into the game's own rendering. There's no in-game option to unlock it; the only route is external frame generation via the NVIDIA App (RTX 50) or Lossless Scaling.
Is it worth dropping every graphics setting to Low to play expeditions better?▾
Not especially. Since the cap is at 60 FPS, the real gain from dropping everything to Low versus a balanced profile (Shadow and Volumetric on Medium/Low, everything else on High) is minimal; it's better to prioritize frame-time stability over maximum FPS.
Does Nightreign have DLSS or FSR?▾
No, neither at launch nor in updates since, as of this guide. FromSoftware keeps the same "basic" approach as Elden Ring, so only third-party or driver-level solutions remain.
Why do I notice more stutter in night bosses than the rest of the expedition?▾
Night bosses combine very dense particle effects, dynamic lighting, and up to 3 players attacking at once, which saturates the CPU's single thread in the Elden Ring engine and produces the most noticeable frame-time spikes of the whole run.
