How to improve FPS in Elden Ring (PC)

Elden Ring is generally a decent PC port from FromSoftware, but it has one well-known issue: the game's physics are tied to framerate and the engine has a native 60 FPS cap. Unlocking higher framerates or fixing frame pacing requires third-party tools. Beyond that, the game responds well to standard graphics adjustments and an RTX 3060 can maintain stable 60 FPS at Ultra.

⚠️ Known for: The native 60 FPS cap (physics tied to framerate) and inconsistent frame pacing. Unlocking FPS requires SpecialK or the Elden Ring Seamless Co-op mod.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +10% free FPS.

Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: 9/10 fuentes
+3% FPS

Elden Ring's depth of field blurs the background during exploration. Off gives a sharper image and saves GPU.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: 10/10 fuentes
+2% FPS

Off by default in any guide. Elden Ring's motion blur is aggressive in combat and causes more confusion than it helps.

SSAO

Recommended: Off o Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: 8/10 fuentes
+5% FPS

Ambient Occlusion in Elden Ring has real cost with minimal visible difference during gameplay. Off provides consistent savings.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: TSSAA · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: 8/10 fuentes
+0% FPS

TSSAA is the best AA option in Elden Ring — better quality than the lower options with similar cost. Keep it here.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Grass Detail

Recommended: Medium (desde High/Ultra) · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: 10/10 fuentes
+15% FPS

The biggest single-setting performance impact available in Elden Ring. Ultra grass is expensive on the CPU. Dropping to Medium gives a noticeable FPS boost with very little visual difference in motion.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: High (desde Ultra) · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: 9/10 fuentes
+8% FPS

Shadow Quality Ultra in Elden Ring doesn't add much over High visually. The FPS benefit is clear.

Volumetric Quality

Recommended: Low-Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: 9/10 fuentes
+10% FPS

Volumetric quality (fog, atmosphere) at Low-Medium maintains the game's atmosphere with significant GPU savings in fog-heavy areas.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: 8/10 fuentes
+0% FPS

Keep Texture Quality at High — Ultra barely improves the image and uses extra VRAM. High is the sweet spot in Elden Ring.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

Sin upscaling nativo

+0% FPS

Elden Ring doesn't include DLSS or FSR natively. If you want upscaling you need mods (DLSS mod or FSR mod) available on Nexus Mods. They work well but require manual installation.

DLAA via mod (NVIDIA RTX)

+0% FPS

With the DLSS mod you can also enable DLAA (DLSS without upscale) for better AA quality. Especially good for players with spare GPU headroom.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •If you want DLSS in Elden Ring, install the DLSS mod from Nexus Mods (well-maintained and works with recent patches).
  • •DLAA (anti-aliasing) via mod is a great option if your RTX has headroom — better image quality than native TSSAA.
  • •Resizable BAR gives minor benefit in Elden Ring (~2%), but enable it if you have a compatible board.

AMD

  • •Elden Ring is well-balanced for AMD — no significant disadvantage compared to NVIDIA without RT.
  • •FSR via mod available on Nexus Mods if you want upscaling.
  • •SAM (Smart Access Memory) can give 2-4% in Elden Ring.

Sistema

  • •To unlock the 60 FPS cap: use SpecialK or install the Elden Ring Seamless Co-op mod (which natively includes an unlocked framerate).
  • •The Erdtree area causes GPU spikes — this is normal, not a system bug.
  • •Closing Discord overlays and other background apps helps with frame pacing, which is already slightly irregular in base Elden Ring.

5. Known game issues

Native 60 FPS cap (physics tied to framerate)

The Elden Ring engine natively caps the game at 60 FPS because some game physics are tied to the framerate. Exceeding that cap requires SpecialK or the Seamless Co-op mod. Without them, forcing more FPS causes physics bugs.

Inconsistent frame pacing

Even at 60 FPS, Elden Ring has slightly inconsistent frame pacing on PC (not present on console). SpecialK fixes it significantly.

Estado: Not officially fixed (use SpecialK to correct it)

GPU spikes in the Erdtree area

The Erdtree area and some DLC zones have geometry density that causes occasional GPU spikes. No direct fix — reducing Volumetric Quality and Grass Detail helps.

6. Frequently asked questions

How many FPS does an RTX 3060 get in Elden Ring?▾
At 1080p Ultra, an RTX 3060 hits the native 60 FPS cap stably. For higher framerates you need to unlock the cap with SpecialK or the Seamless Co-op mod.
How do I unlock the 60 FPS limit?▾
Use SpecialK (free PC tool) or install the Elden Ring Seamless Co-op mod which includes an unlocked framerate natively. Both options are safe and widely used.
What setting gives the most FPS in Elden Ring?▾
Grass Detail from Ultra to Medium gives the biggest jump (+15% CPU). Then Volumetric Quality Low-Medium and Shadow Quality High complete the main optimizations.
Does Elden Ring have DLSS or FSR?▾
Not natively. There are mods on Nexus Mods that add both DLSS and FSR and they work well with recent game patches.
