How to improve FPS in Resident Evil 4 Remake (PC)

Resident Evil 4 Remake rebuilds Leon Kennedy's journey through the Ganado-infested Spanish village with the RE Engine, running through the village, Duke Salazar's castle, and the military island. Capcom's engine handles fog, rain, and forest lighting smoothly, but it's demanding on VRAM at high Texture Quality and adds optional Ray Tracing (reflections and shadows) that spikes GPU cost. With the right settings you can hold stable FPS in both the village assault and the castle's dark interiors.

⚠️ Known for: RE4 Remake is notoriously bad at VRAM management: with Texture Quality on High or Max on 8GB GPUs it can cause sharp framerate drops, stuttering, and even textures that fail to load — a heavily documented problem since launch, only partially mitigated by later patches.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +43% free FPS.

Texture Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Adjust based on your VRAM, not your GPU power: it's the number one reported cause of stuttering according to the community.
+12% FPS

The setting with the biggest VRAM impact in the game. On GPUs with 8GB or less, raising it from Medium to High can saturate video memory and cause constant micro-stutter, even with the GPU having plenty of raw power to spare.

Ray Tracing (reflections and shadows)

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Almost nobody keeps it on except with an RTX 4070 Ti or higher; the visual cost/benefit ratio is low.
+15% FPS

RT in RE4 Remake improves reflections in puddles and glass and softens contact shadows, but its frame-time cost is high for a subtle visual improvement in most scenes.

Volumetric Lighting

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Lowering it to Medium is one of the most recommended changes in the game's optimization forums.

Light shafts cutting through the forest fog and the castle interior consume a lot of GPU on Max without adding much over Medium.

Mesh Quality

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: One of the settings with the best FPS-gained-per-visual-impact-lost ratio.
+10% FPS

Dynamic shadows across the village and countryside, especially with torches and fire, carry a considerable cost on Max. Medium keeps sharp shadows near the player.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to lower it if you're not using Ray Tracing reflections.
+7% FPS

Affects reflections on wet surfaces, very present due to the constant rain. On Low they lose some definition but the performance savings make up for it.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common setting to free up FPS headroom without sacrificing visual cohesion.
+6% FPS

Softens the contact between objects and surfaces. The difference between High and Medium is hard to notice during dynamic gameplay.

Model Quality (characters and Ganados)

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Only recommended to lower to Medium on entry-level GPUs; the visual impact is more noticeable than with other settings.
+4% FPS

Affects the detail level of enemy and NPC models. Lowering it too much shows up in close-up cutscenes, so it's recommended to keep it high except on very limited hardware.

Fog Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A recommended change in mid-range configurations for GPUs with less than 10 GB of VRAM.
+5% FPS

The village and countryside fog at dusk is a visual signature of the game, but on Max it adds an extra volumetric rendering load that's barely perceptible compared to Medium.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS (Quality)

+30% FPS

Added after launch alongside Frame Generation. In Quality mode it's nearly indistinguishable from native and delivers a considerable FPS margin, especially useful at 1440p and 4K.

DLSS + Frame Generation

+55% FPS

The ideal combination on RTX 40 series to break 100 FPS in demanding castle scenes, though it adds some perceptible latency in very fast combat.

AMD FSR 2 (Quality)

+25% FPS

A good cross-platform alternative, with somewhat more ghosting on Leon's hair and clothing during sudden movements than the DLSS version.

Intel XeSS (Quality)

+22% FPS

Support added in later patches. Works well on Arc, and offers a valid alternative on other GPUs when DLSS or FSR aren't ideal.

NVIDIA

  • •Enable DLSS in Quality before touching shadow or texture settings: it usually delivers more margin than lowering graphics quality.
  • •On RTX 40, try Frame Generation in exploration zones; disable it in combat if you notice input lag.
  • •With 8GB of VRAM (RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 4060), keep Texture Quality on Medium to avoid the frame-time hitches reported on High.

AMD

  • •FSR 2 has run stably since the improvement patch; pair it with Medium Volumetric Lighting for extra margin.
  • •On RX 6000/7000 cards with 8GB, watch VRAM usage in the overlay: RE4 Remake saturates it quickly on High.
  • •Smart Access Memory (Resizable BAR) gives a notable, stable improvement in this game; confirm it's enabled in the BIOS.

Intel

  • •On Arc, enable Resizable BAR: it's practically mandatory for stable performance in the RE Engine.
  • •XeSS usually performs better than FSR 2 on these GPUs; try it first in Quality.

Stuttering from VRAM saturation

On 8GB GPUs with Texture Quality on High or Max, the game can suffer sudden framerate drops and micro-stutter while moving through the village or countryside, even on hardware with plenty of power.

Estado: Partially mitigated in post-launch updates, but the problem persists if high textures are forced with limited VRAM.

Shader compilation stutter on first launch

The first sessions after installing or updating the game can show punctual hitching while shaders compile; it stabilizes after the first few play sessions.

Frame Generation input lag in fast fights

With DLSS Frame Generation enabled, some players report a sense of delay in shooting and dodging during fights with several Ganados at once, especially noticeable in the initial village assault.

How much VRAM do I need to play Resident Evil 4 Remake without stuttering?▾
With 8GB of VRAM it's advisable to keep Texture Quality on Medium. To play with textures on High or Max stably, you'll want at least 10-12GB of VRAM, especially at 1440p or 4K.
Is it worth enabling Ray Tracing in RE4 Remake?▾
Only if you have an RTX 4070 Ti or higher and prioritize the reflections in the village's puddles and glass. The FPS cost is high and the visual impact subtle in most gameplay scenes.
