How to improve FPS in Monster Hunter: World (PC)

Monster Hunter: World is a 2018 port carrying Capcom's proprietary console-inherited engine, and it shows: with modern hardware you can easily clear 60 FPS in hunting zones like the Ancient Forest or the Rotten Vale, but a handful of poorly scaled options (Volume Rendering above all) can tank your framerate if you leave them on High without a second thought. This guide focuses on those specific options to maximize FPS without sacrificing the visual readability the hunt needs.

⚠️ Known for: The "Volume Rendering" setting (volumetric fog and clouds) is by far the biggest FPS eater in the game: it alone can cost between 15 and 25% of performance in open zones like the Ancient Forest, without a proportional visual improvement. 1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +43% free FPS.

Volume Rendering

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Total agreement across Steam and Reddit guides: it's the first thing recommended to lower, even before shadows or textures.
+18% FPS

Controls the volumetric density of fog, clouds, and smoke in zones like the Ancient Forest or the Rotten Vale. It's the single heaviest setting in the game and its cost doesn't match the visual improvement it brings.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Very high consensus: the community feels Low is barely distinguishable from Medium/High in motion during the hunt.
+10% FPS

Dynamic shadows on monsters and vegetation carry a high cost relative to the visual difference between Low and High, especially outdoors with dense foliage.

Vertical Sync

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: High consensus: it's recommended to disable it and control tearing with V-Sync from the NVIDIA/AMD control panel or G-Sync/FreeSync if available.

Texture Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: High consensus: adjust based on available VRAM, not as a primary performance lever.
+8% FPS

This setting depends almost entirely on your GPU's VRAM, not its compute power. With 4GB of VRAM use Low/Medium, with 6-8GB you can go up to High, and with 12GB or more you can opt for Highest with no real penalty. Dropping it to minimum only frees up about 2% extra FPS, so it's not worth sacrificing if your VRAM allows it.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: TAA · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Medium consensus: some prefer FXAA for sharpness, but TAA is the majority recommendation for mid-range hardware.
+5% FPS

TAA offers the best balance between edge smoothing and performance cost. FXAA is cheaper but blurs textures; disabling it entirely generates a lot of aliasing on monster fur.

Grass Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Medium-high consensus in optimization forums.
+7% FPS

Vegetation density in zones like the Ancient Forest or the Coral Highlands has a notable impact on mid-to-low-end GPUs, without the visual difference from High being very marked while hunting on the move.

Water Simulation Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Medium consensus among community guides.
+5% FPS

Affects the simulation of rivers, lakes, and wet zones in the Rotten Vale. A moderate cost that can be reduced without it standing out much outside of water areas.

Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Medium-high consensus: disabled both for performance and visual clarity.
+3% FPS

Depth of field blur has a low but constant cost and many players disable it also by preference, since it makes it harder to see details at range while hunting.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

Resolution Scale (native engine)

+15% FPS

Monster Hunter: World is a 2018 port with no native support for modern DLSS, FSR, or XeSS. The only scaling option available is the engine's internal "Resolution Scale," which renders below your output resolution and upscales. It's a basic bilinear scale: it works to gain FPS on limited hardware, but sharpness drops noticeably below 80-85%, so only use it if you need extra performance headroom.

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Reflex if your GPU supports it to reduce input lag in hunts with a lot of camera movement.
  • •Use the NVIDIA control panel to force adaptive V-Sync instead of the game's internal V-Sync, which is more consistent and has less input lag.
  • •On GPUs with 8GB or more of VRAM (RTX 3070 or higher) you can raise Texture Quality to High/Highest without fear of stuttering.

AMD

  • •Enable Radeon Anti-Lag to offset the input lag the game's engine introduces in prolonged fights.
  • •Check that Radeon Chill isn't limiting your framerate in exploration zones where camera movement is low.
  • •On RDNA2/RDNA3 GPUs with 8GB+ of VRAM, Texture Quality on High barely affects performance; the bottleneck is usually Volume Rendering, not textures.

  • •Install the game on an SSD: large zones like the Rotten Vale load textures progressively and an HDD can cause visible pop-in.
  • •Close third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner) if you notice micro-stutter, since MHW's engine is sensitive to external hooks.

In extensive maps like the Rotten Vale, high-resolution texture streaming can cause brief framerate drops when traveling quickly between subzones, especially with Texture Quality maxed and little VRAM available.
