How to improve FPS in Hunt: Showdown 1896 (PC)

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is Crytek's deep rebuild of its PvPvE bounty-hunting extraction shooter, keeping the CryEngine base but overhauling lighting, textures, and materials from top to bottom. The result is a denser, more oppressive Louisiana swamp than ever, with volumetric fog and vegetation that punish any mid-range GPU. Unlike a typical competitive shooter, lowering certain graphics here isn't just a performance question: it literally changes what you can see and hear. Positional audio is the game's core mechanic, so the CPU and audio processing matter as much as the frame count. This guide covers the settings that really move the needle without wrecking your competitive edge.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +39% free FPS.

Foliage/Grass Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: High · Consensus: The competitive community considers it nearly mandatory on Low; it's the same logic as "grass render distance" in other survival shooters, and the effect is even more pronounced here given the density of the bayou.
+12% FPS

This is the single most important setting in all of Hunt: Showdown, and not just for FPS. On High/Ultra, the brush and shrubs are so dense that a crouched hunter can be completely invisible at 20 meters. Dropping it to Low drastically reduces that vegetation cover, revealing silhouettes that simply aren't visible on higher settings.

Volumetric Fog

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended to lower it to Low or Medium unless you have an RTX 4070 or better; on Ultra, the 1% low impact is noticeable in the swamp areas.
+10% FPS

Volumetric fog is one of the visual trademarks of the 1896 relaunch, but also one of the biggest GPU consumers indoors and in swamp areas. Lowering it doesn't remove the atmosphere, just reduces the density of the light-scattering layers that cost the most to compute.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: The consensus pick as the best balance; Low strips away too much useful information for spotting enemies in motion.
+8% FPS

CryEngine still uses relatively expensive cascaded shadows, and the relaunch's lighting overhaul makes them even more demanding. Medium keeps believable contact shadows for detecting movement without paying the cost of Ultra's long-distance shadows.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: FXAA · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Heavily debated among casual players who prefer TAA for image stability, but the competitive scene prioritizes sharpness and picks FXAA or disables it outright.
+6% FPS

CryEngine's default TAA adds noticeable blur that makes it harder to distinguish distant silhouettes among the vegetation, exactly the opposite of what you want in a game about sound and long-range vision. FXAA costs much less and, combined with upscaling, leaves acceptable edges without that excessive smoothing.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Disabled almost universally by serious players; no one argues for keeping it on for PvP.
+3% FPS

Motion blur adds nothing in a shooter where reacting in a fraction of a second to lateral movement is the difference between killing and dying. Disabling it costs almost no performance but improves clarity in close combat.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Clear consensus to keep it high whenever VRAM allows; the FPS impact is minimal compared to foliage or fog.
+5% FPS

The 1896 relaunch's texture overhaul is one of its greatest visual achievements, and with at least 8GB of VRAM you can keep it on High with no real FPS penalty. Only drop to Medium if your card has less than 6GB of VRAM, where texture streaming can cause microstutters.

View Distance

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Optimization guides agree Medium is the sweet spot; Ultra barely adds useful information beyond a certain real combat range.
+7% FPS

Outdoor draw distance affects both objects and distant vegetation density. Medium keeps useful visibility for detecting movement at range without the streaming penalty Ultra imposes in the most open swamp areas.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Lowering it to Medium is a common recommendation with almost no perceptible visual cost in the heat of combat.
+6% FPS

Ambient occlusion adds depth in farm and compound interiors, but on Ultra the performance cost doesn't match the perceptible visual improvement during combat.

Post-Processing / Bloom

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to lower by players who play at night or in dark interiors, where excessive bloom washes out the image.
+4% FPS

Post-processing effects and bloom around light sources (lanterns, tracer fire, flames) can create glare that makes it hard to see an enemy just behind them. Reducing it improves both performance and readability in nighttime scenes.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Widely disabled; its visual impact is low compared to its cost, especially in swamp areas with more water.
+4% FPS

Puddles and wet surfaces in the swamp use screen-space reflections that consume GPU resources without adding relevant tactical information. Disabling it is an almost free gain.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS 3 (with Frame Generation on RTX 40)

+45% FPS

The 1896 relaunch added full DLSS 3, including Frame Generation for RTX 40 cards. In Balanced or Performance mode it lets you play at 1440p or even 4K smoothly on mid-range cards, though it's worth watching the added latency from Frame Generation in close combat where shot precision matters.

AMD FSR 3

+35% FPS

FSR 3 arrived alongside the rest of the modern upscaling package and works on any GPU, not just AMD, making it the default option for anyone with an older card or a different brand. Image quality is somewhat lower than DLSS in scenes with dense vegetation, where the reconstructor tends to generate some shimmering on leaf edges.

Intel XeSS

+30% FPS

XeSS offers a solid alternative for Intel Arc GPUs and also runs on NVIDIA/AMD hardware as an extra option. Its quality sits between FSR and DLSS, and it's a good choice if FSR 3 shows too many artifacts in the swamp foliage on your specific setup.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Reflex from the NVIDIA panel or the game's options to reduce input latency, especially if you use DLSS Frame Generation, which by nature adds delay between input and displayed frame.
  • •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers marked for Hunt: Showdown 1896; Crytek has released several shader patches since the relaunch and older drivers cause shader-compilation stutter in the first match.
  • •On RTX 30 cards without Frame Generation support, prioritize DLSS Quality or Balanced instead of forcing Ultra Performance, which introduces too much ghosting on moving vegetation.

AMD

  • •Enable Anti-Lag+ in Adrenalin software to offset the latency added by FSR 3 Frame Generation on RX 7000 GPUs that support it.
  • •RX 6000 GPUs benefit more from FSR 3 in Quality mode than from forcing high native settings; the rewritten CryEngine demands more ROPs than these cards comfortably offer.
  • •Check that the GPU memory mode is set to performance (not power-saving) in the Adrenalin panel, since Hunt saturates the memory bus in the swamp's dense fog scenes.

  • •Prioritize a CPU with good single-core performance and enough cache: Hunt's positional audio engine, which calculates sound reflections and occlusion in real time, depends much more on the CPU than the GPU to stay smooth.
  • •Install the game on an NVMe SSD if possible; the 1896 relaunch's high-resolution texture streaming can cause visible pop-in on mechanical or slow SATA drives when entering new map zones.
  • •Close background applications that use the microphone or process audio (Discord with aggressive noise cancellation, for example) so they don't compete for CPU cycles with the game's positional sound engine, critical for detecting footsteps at a distance.

Shader compilation on launch after the relaunch

Many players reported severe stuttering in the first matches after the 1896 update, caused by recompilation of the shader cache for the new lighting engine. It usually disappears after the first two or three matches while the cache builds up fully.

VRAM spikes with Texture Quality on Ultra

On cards with 6GB of VRAM or less, setting textures to Ultra causes intermittent framerate drops when loading several densely vegetated map zones at once, due to VRAM buffer saturation.

Inconsistent positional audio in multi-floor interiors

Some players report that the perceived direction of footsteps and gunshots inside multi-level compounds (like forts or prisons) can sound imprecise, making it harder to correctly read enemy position in vertical combat.

Is it really worth lowering Foliage Quality even if I have a powerful GPU?▾
Yes. It's not just an FPS question: on Ultra the vegetation completely hides crouched or prone players at close range, while on Low those same silhouettes are visible. Competitive players lower it even with an RTX 4080 for the tactical advantage, not for performance.
Do DLSS or FSR affect my ability to hear or see enemies?▾
Not directly the audio, but they can introduce slight shimmering or ghosting on moving foliage with very aggressive Performance settings, which could theoretically slightly camouflage a moving silhouette. In Quality or Balanced the effect is practically imperceptible.
How much VRAM do I need for the 1896 relaunch compared to classic Hunt?▾
The texture and lighting upgrade of the relaunch noticeably increases VRAM consumption compared to the original Hunt: Showdown. A minimum of 8GB is recommended to play with Texture Quality on High without stuttering, and ideally 10-12GB if you also use Ultra on other settings.
Why does my CPU seem to limit FPS more than the GPU in this game?▾
Hunt's positional audio engine calculates in real time the propagation of sound, reflections, and occlusion from dozens of simultaneous sound sources, a load that falls almost entirely on the CPU. On large maps with a lot of AI and several active teams, this can become the real bottleneck before the GPU.
