Hunt: Showdown 1896 is Crytek's deep rebuild of its PvPvE bounty-hunting extraction shooter, keeping the CryEngine base but overhauling lighting, textures, and materials from top to bottom. The result is a denser, more oppressive Louisiana swamp than ever, with volumetric fog and vegetation that punish any mid-range GPU. Unlike a typical competitive shooter, lowering certain graphics here isn't just a performance question: it literally changes what you can see and hear. Positional audio is the game's core mechanic, so the CPU and audio processing matter as much as the frame count. This guide covers the settings that really move the needle without wrecking your competitive edge.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +39% free FPS.
Foliage/Grass Quality
This is the single most important setting in all of Hunt: Showdown, and not just for FPS. On High/Ultra, the brush and shrubs are so dense that a crouched hunter can be completely invisible at 20 meters. Dropping it to Low drastically reduces that vegetation cover, revealing silhouettes that simply aren't visible on higher settings.
Volumetric Fog
Volumetric fog is one of the visual trademarks of the 1896 relaunch, but also one of the biggest GPU consumers indoors and in swamp areas. Lowering it doesn't remove the atmosphere, just reduces the density of the light-scattering layers that cost the most to compute.
Shadow Quality
CryEngine still uses relatively expensive cascaded shadows, and the relaunch's lighting overhaul makes them even more demanding. Medium keeps believable contact shadows for detecting movement without paying the cost of Ultra's long-distance shadows.
Anti-Aliasing
CryEngine's default TAA adds noticeable blur that makes it harder to distinguish distant silhouettes among the vegetation, exactly the opposite of what you want in a game about sound and long-range vision. FXAA costs much less and, combined with upscaling, leaves acceptable edges without that excessive smoothing.
Motion Blur
Motion blur adds nothing in a shooter where reacting in a fraction of a second to lateral movement is the difference between killing and dying. Disabling it costs almost no performance but improves clarity in close combat.

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Texture Quality
The 1896 relaunch's texture overhaul is one of its greatest visual achievements, and with at least 8GB of VRAM you can keep it on High with no real FPS penalty. Only drop to Medium if your card has less than 6GB of VRAM, where texture streaming can cause microstutters.
View Distance
Outdoor draw distance affects both objects and distant vegetation density. Medium keeps useful visibility for detecting movement at range without the streaming penalty Ultra imposes in the most open swamp areas.
Ambient Occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds depth in farm and compound interiors, but on Ultra the performance cost doesn't match the perceptible visual improvement during combat.
Post-Processing / Bloom
Post-processing effects and bloom around light sources (lanterns, tracer fire, flames) can create glare that makes it hard to see an enemy just behind them. Reducing it improves both performance and readability in nighttime scenes.
Screen Space Reflections
Puddles and wet surfaces in the swamp use screen-space reflections that consume GPU resources without adding relevant tactical information. Disabling it is an almost free gain.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
NVIDIA DLSS 3 (with Frame Generation on RTX 40)
+45% FPSThe 1896 relaunch added full DLSS 3, including Frame Generation for RTX 40 cards. In Balanced or Performance mode it lets you play at 1440p or even 4K smoothly on mid-range cards, though it's worth watching the added latency from Frame Generation in close combat where shot precision matters.
AMD FSR 3
+35% FPSFSR 3 arrived alongside the rest of the modern upscaling package and works on any GPU, not just AMD, making it the default option for anyone with an older card or a different brand. Image quality is somewhat lower than DLSS in scenes with dense vegetation, where the reconstructor tends to generate some shimmering on leaf edges.
Intel XeSS
+30% FPSXeSS offers a solid alternative for Intel Arc GPUs and also runs on NVIDIA/AMD hardware as an extra option. Its quality sits between FSR and DLSS, and it's a good choice if FSR 3 shows too many artifacts in the swamp foliage on your specific setup.

NVIDIA
- •Enable Reflex from the NVIDIA panel or the game's options to reduce input latency, especially if you use DLSS Frame Generation, which by nature adds delay between input and displayed frame.
- •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers marked for Hunt: Showdown 1896; Crytek has released several shader patches since the relaunch and older drivers cause shader-compilation stutter in the first match.
- •On RTX 30 cards without Frame Generation support, prioritize DLSS Quality or Balanced instead of forcing Ultra Performance, which introduces too much ghosting on moving vegetation.
