How to improve FPS in Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred (PC)

Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred is Blizzard's major expansion that expands Sanctuary with new zones, an all-new final boss, and a skill system noticeably expanded compared to the base game. Built on the same proprietary Diablo IV engine, it keeps the isometric hack-and-slash formula with a top-down camera, procedurally generated dungeons, and world events where dozens of players share the same zone. The expansion intensifies exactly what already defined Diablo IV's performance profile: skill builds loaded with ever more simultaneous particle effects, enemies stacked on screen, and high-density zones where the engine has to simulate physics, collisions, and AI for dozens of entities at once, on top of rendering the new zones with their own level of environmental detail.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: It's one of the most recommended settings by the community since the base game launched; the visual impact in the isometric view is minimal compared to the FPS gain.
+12% FPS

Dynamic shadows from characters, enemies, and skill effects are constantly recalculated in the Diablo IV engine, and in zones with high enemy density their cost grows noticeably. Lowering to Medium keeps isometric combat readable without the cost of High/Ultra.

Skill/Spell Effects Density

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: The community agrees this is the setting with the best performance return in the game, especially in mass-skill builds or co-op sessions with several players firing off effects at once.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to keep on High except on cards with 6 GB VRAM or less, where lowering it to Medium helps avoid streaming stutter.

Character, gear, and environment textures across Sanctuary cost mostly VRAM rather than raw compute power, so High is usually enough on most modern GPUs.

View Distance

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A setting recommended on forums to free up extra headroom in open-world zones without meaningful visual sacrifice.

Controls how much environmental and enemy detail is rendered in the expansion's open zones; at High/Ultra the cost rises in large outdoor areas without much being noticed from the isometric view.

Global Illumination

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Lowering it to Medium is one of the settings with the best FPS-gained-to-visual-loss ratio according to the community.

Dynamic global illumination recalculates light propagation in dungeons and the expansion's new zones, especially in scenes with many active skill light sources at once.

Post-Processing

Groups bloom, vignetting, and color corrections applied full-screen; at its highest level its cost rises more than it improves the readability of combat.

Anti-Aliasing (TAA)

TAA smooths character and environment edges well, but at its highest level adds a sampling cost that competes with the rest of the graphical effects, especially at higher resolutions.

NVIDIA DLSS

Diablo IV has supported DLSS since the base game, and it remains useful in the expansion, especially at 1440p/4K, to absorb the load spikes from the new zones and massive skill effects.

AMD FSR

FSR works on any GPU and is the recommended alternative for those without a recent NVIDIA card, with good image quality in Quality mode.

Intel XeSS

+18% FPS

XeSS is available as a third scaling option, with good performance on Intel Arc GPUs and also compatible with NVIDIA and AMD hardware.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Use DLSS in Quality or Balanced mode at 1440p/4K if you notice FPS drops during massive world events, before lowering other graphics settings further.
  • •Keep Game Ready drivers updated; Blizzard and NVIDIA usually publish specific optimizations after the launch of major expansions like this one.
  • •Enable Low Latency Mode from the NVIDIA control panel to improve skill-click responsiveness in fights with many enemies stacked on screen.

AMD

  • •FSR in Quality mode is a good option if your CPU has headroom and you're after more FPS margin at higher resolutions, since the expansion tends to be more CPU-bound than GPU-bound in crowded zones.
  • •Enable Radeon Anti-Lag to offset latency in the most chaotic fights, with lots of simultaneous skills and enemies on screen.

When many players converge on the same zone for a world event, the combination of enemy AI, network sync, and simultaneous skill effects can generate noticeable framerate drops, even on rigs that have headroom the rest of the playthrough.

CPU spikes with many simultaneous skills

The expansion's expanded skill system allows more active effects at once than the base game, which in area builds or co-op sessions can cause CPU usage spikes and occasional micro-stutters, especially on older processors.

Stuttering when entering the new zones

As with the base game, it's common to notice an occasional hitch when loading the expansion's new zones while the engine streams textures and geometry, behavior that usually improves after the first few visits to each area.
