How to improve FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (PC)

Modern Warfare III runs on the same IW engine as Warzone and Black Ops 6, but its load distribution differs by mode. The campaign (Operation 627) and classic 6v6 multiplayer are reasonably light since the maps are closed and mid-sized, with predictable texture streaming. Zombies mode is a different beast entirely: it's played on Urzikstan, an open DMZ-style map shared by dozens of players, with constant AI, extractions, and dynamic weather, which spikes asset streaming requests and VRAM usage well above multiplayer. This guide separates both scenarios so you can tune shadows, textures, and streaming for whatever you're actually playing.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +27% free FPS.

On-Demand Texture Streaming

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Nearly unanimous recommendation in performance guides and even in the game's own menu if you have 8GB+ of VRAM.
+6% FPS

Preloads textures into VRAM instead of requesting them on the fly. In Zombies (Urzikstan) it reduces hitching when moving fast across the open map; in classic multiplayer the impact is smaller but still positive.

Shadow Map Resolution

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Confirmed by Digital Foundry and most optimization guides as the game's best FPS-to-visual-quality ratio.
+8% FPS

Dynamic shadows are among the IW engine's most expensive settings. In 6v6 firefights with lots of geometry on screen the savings are notable and the visual loss goes unnoticed in combat.

Particle Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: High consensus in the community, especially among players focused on competitive visibility.
+5% FPS

Reduces smoke, sparks, and gunfire effects. In Zombies, with large hordes and explosives, this setting avoids punctual FPS drops that classic multiplayer doesn't experience.

Volumetric Quality

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended in most guides, with the caveat that on some campaign maps it does add atmosphere.
+4% FPS

Fog and volumetric light add render cost in outdoor scenes. In Urzikstan, with dynamic weather, the savings are more noticeable than in multiplayer interiors.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: FSAA Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common practice when combined with DLSS/FSR, which already provide their own temporal antialiasing.
+4% FPS

Lowering the edge-smoothing level eases GPU load without much impact on sharpness if you're already using upscaling with its own temporal filter.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Resolution

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended by most optimization benchmarks for cards with 8GB of VRAM or less.
+3% FPS

Dropping one step from Extreme reduces VRAM consumption from ~7GB to ~4GB at 1080p with no perceptible visual loss in combat, freeing up margin for Zombies on Urzikstan.

VRAM Scale Target

Recommended: 80 · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A recurring setting in anti-stutter guides since this slider was introduced in post-launch updates.
+5% FPS

Reserving 80% instead of the default 90% reduces stutter spikes when the game tries to fill all available VRAM, especially noticeable in Zombies with many players connected.

Reflection Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: High consensus among competitive and general optimization guides.
+5% FPS

Full-screen reflections (puddles, glass, wet surfaces) carry a high GPU cost for their real visual payoff in combat.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A standard recommendation except for those prioritizing fidelity in campaign mode.
+3% FPS

Ambient occlusion adds depth to corners and objects, but its cost doesn't pay off in fast multiplayer matches; in campaign it can be raised with no serious penalty.

Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Unanimous recommendation in guides aimed at competitive multiplayer.
+2% FPS

Depth-of-field blur offers no competitive advantage and blurs distant targets; disabling it also saves a small performance margin.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS (Balanced)

+30% FPS

The recommended option on RTX cards. MW3 integrates DLSS 3 with Frame Generation on series 40 GPUs, which can nearly double perceived framerate in Zombies scenes with heavy streaming load.

AMD FSR 2 (Balanced)

+22% FPS

A good cross-platform alternative for AMD and Intel GPUs. FSR 2's temporal upscaling keeps decent sharpness at 1440p/4K, though it shows more ghosting than DLSS in fast motion.

NVIDIA Reflex

+8% FPS

Doesn't directly raise FPS but noticeably reduces input latency, which is key in competitive 6v6 multiplayer; enable it whenever you play on an NVIDIA GPU.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Reflex + Boost in the control panel to minimize input lag in competitive multiplayer.
  • •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers before each new season; MW3 gets frequent content patches that can occasionally desync with older drivers.
  • •On RTX 40, enable DLSS Frame Generation only if you're already above 60 base FPS; below that, the added input lag doesn't pay off.

AMD

  • •Use Radeon Anti-Lag to offset the extra latency from FSR upscaling in Zombies with heavy asset streaming.
  • •Check VRAM usage in Radeon Software: on 8GB cards, dropping Texture Resolution to High avoids the swapping that causes micro-stutter in Urzikstan.
  • •Smart Access Memory (SAM) helps especially in combination with recent Ryzen CPUs during the open map's streaming loads.

  • •Install the game on an SSD (NVMe ideally): in Zombies, Urzikstan's constant streaming penalizes mechanical drives far more than classic multiplayer.
  • •Disable the Steam overlay and third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience) if you notice lower-than-expected GPU usage; it's a documented issue in MW3.
  • •Close background applications that use the disk (cloud sync, antivirus with active scanning) before long Zombies sessions to avoid I/O bottlenecks.

VRAM micro-stutter in Zombies (Urzikstan)

With VRAM Scale Target at its default 90 and cards with 8GB or less, the game tries to fill nearly all available memory during extractions and large horde encounters, causing punctual frame-time drops. Lowering the slider to 80 or below and dropping Texture Resolution one step mitigates the problem.

Estado: Partially mitigated in post-launch patches; the VRAM Scale slider was added as a direct response to this issue.

Lower GPU usage with overlays active

Several players report that the Steam overlay or other third-party overlays cause the GPU to not run at full capacity, resulting in FPS below what's expected for the hardware. Disabling overlays resolves the issue in most cases.

Why does Zombies on Urzikstan give me fewer FPS than 6v6 multiplayer?▾
Urzikstan is an open map shared by dozens of players with constant AI and dynamic weather, which multiplies texture and object streaming compared to a closed classic multiplayer map. It's normal to lose between 15% and 25% of FPS versus multiplayer on the same hardware.
Do I need an SSD to play MW3 well?▾
Technically the game runs on a mechanical drive, but in Zombies you'll notice frequent stuttering from the open map's constant streaming. For classic multiplayer the impact is smaller, but an SSD (NVMe ideally) is still highly recommended across the whole game.
Do DLSS or FSR give a competitive edge in MW3 multiplayer?▾
Both notably boost FPS, which reduces total system latency and improves perceived smoothness in firefights. DLSS in Balanced mode usually offers a better sharpness-to-performance ratio than FSR 2 at the same quality tier, especially on distant targets.
Is it worth raising shadows and reflections in campaign if I lower them in multiplayer?▾
Yes, it makes sense to use two graphics profiles: one aggressively tuned for performance in competitive multiplayer and another more balanced one for the campaign (Operation 627), where the pace is slower and you can afford higher shadows and reflections without losing any edge.
