
How to improve FPS in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (PC)
Modern Warfare III runs on the same IW engine as Warzone and Black Ops 6, but its load distribution differs by mode. The campaign (Operation 627) and classic 6v6 multiplayer are reasonably light since the maps are closed and mid-sized, with predictable texture streaming. Zombies mode is a different beast entirely: it's played on Urzikstan, an open DMZ-style map shared by dozens of players, with constant AI, extractions, and dynamic weather, which spikes asset streaming requests and VRAM usage well above multiplayer. This guide separates both scenarios so you can tune shadows, textures, and streaming for whatever you're actually playing.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +27% free FPS.
On-Demand Texture Streaming
Preloads textures into VRAM instead of requesting them on the fly. In Zombies (Urzikstan) it reduces hitching when moving fast across the open map; in classic multiplayer the impact is smaller but still positive.
Shadow Map Resolution
Dynamic shadows are among the IW engine's most expensive settings. In 6v6 firefights with lots of geometry on screen the savings are notable and the visual loss goes unnoticed in combat.
Particle Quality
Reduces smoke, sparks, and gunfire effects. In Zombies, with large hordes and explosives, this setting avoids punctual FPS drops that classic multiplayer doesn't experience.
Volumetric Quality
Fog and volumetric light add render cost in outdoor scenes. In Urzikstan, with dynamic weather, the savings are more noticeable than in multiplayer interiors.
Anti-Aliasing
Lowering the edge-smoothing level eases GPU load without much impact on sharpness if you're already using upscaling with its own temporal filter.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Texture Resolution
Dropping one step from Extreme reduces VRAM consumption from ~7GB to ~4GB at 1080p with no perceptible visual loss in combat, freeing up margin for Zombies on Urzikstan.
VRAM Scale Target
Reserving 80% instead of the default 90% reduces stutter spikes when the game tries to fill all available VRAM, especially noticeable in Zombies with many players connected.
Reflection Quality
Full-screen reflections (puddles, glass, wet surfaces) carry a high GPU cost for their real visual payoff in combat.
Ambient Occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds depth to corners and objects, but its cost doesn't pay off in fast multiplayer matches; in campaign it can be raised with no serious penalty.
Depth of Field
Depth-of-field blur offers no competitive advantage and blurs distant targets; disabling it also saves a small performance margin.

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA

- •On RTX 40, enable DLSS Frame Generation only if you're already above 60 base FPS; below that, the added input lag doesn't pay off.

- •Use Radeon Anti-Lag to offset the extra latency from FSR upscaling in Zombies with heavy asset streaming.

Lowering the slider to 80 or below and dropping Texture Resolution one step mitigates the problem.

Lower GPU usage with overlays active
