How to improve FPS in Black Squad (PC)

Black Squad is a free-to-play tactical team shooter built on Unreal Engine 3, with a design philosophy inherited directly from Counter-Strike and Sudden Attack: short rounds, weapon economy, and precision over visual spectacle. Its now-veteran engine was designed to run in internet cafes across Latin America and Asia on modest hardware, so the performance ceiling on current PCs is practically limitless if the parameters are tuned properly. The competitive community — very active in countries like Peru, Brazil, and the Philippines — has spent years refining configurations to squeeze out every possible frame. The real goal here is to maximize stable FPS and minimize input lag to play at a competitive level.

⚠️ Known for: Being one of the few modern tactical shooters that can still run at over 300 FPS on very low-end PCs thanks to its uncompromised Unreal Engine 3 with no unnecessary effects.

Calculations based on our FPS model combined with the % gain of each setting (measured in public benchmarks).

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +56% free FPS.

V-Sync

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: The competitive community disables it without exception; it's one of the least debated settings in the game.
+18% FPS

V-Sync adds direct input lag by capping the refresh rate to the monitor's, something critical in a fast-reaction game like this one. Disabling it is the mandatory first step in any competitive setup.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Total unanimity: nobody competes with motion blur turned on in this game.
+6% FPS

Motion blur from the UE3 engine penalizes quick recognition of enemy silhouettes when turning the camera. It's disabled almost universally in the competitive scene.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Most players set it to minimum; some veterans prefer turning it off entirely for sharpness.
+10% FPS

Edge smoothing in Unreal Engine 3 uses an old and relatively costly implementation for what it delivers visually. Dropping it to Low also improves the definition of distant enemy model edges.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: A standard tweak in any competitive settings guide for the game.
+14% FPS

Dynamic shadows on Black Squad's maps are among the elements that impose the most load on the engine without providing any useful gameplay information. Dropping them to Low eliminates shadow flickering during movement.

Effects Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended both for performance and tactical visibility in close-quarters fights.
+8% FPS

Particle effects can clutter the screen in group firefights and hide enemy silhouettes. Reducing this setting to Low improves performance and makes it easier to see through smoke in critical moments.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Most players leave it on Medium unless they have a GPU with 6GB+ of VRAM.
+7% FPS

Being a 2018 engine based on Unreal Engine 3, textures are already modest resolution, so the visual difference between Medium and Ultra is minimal.

Foliage/Grass Density

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: High · Consensus: Considered almost mandatory in the competitive scene for visibility reasons, not just FPS.
+12% FPS

Grass and vegetation density on outdoor maps can completely hide crouched or prone players, creating a real competitive disadvantage on top of a noticeable performance cost.

Post-Processing

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Consistently recommended in Spanish-speaking community configuration guides.
+9% FPS

Post-processing effects like bloom and color correction add a visual veil that reduces contrast between character models and the environment background.

View Distance

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: The community agrees on keeping it high despite the slight FPS loss, for the tactical advantage.
+5% FPS

Black Squad has open maps where spotting enemies at long range is key, and this setting's performance cost is low thanks to how lightweight the engine is.

Resolution Scale

Recommended: 100 · Visual impact: High · Consensus: Left at 100 except on very low-end hardware or older laptops without a dedicated GPU.
+15% FPS

Dropping the resolution scale below 100 on very limited GPUs can free up extra FPS, but it's only recommended on genuinely old hardware.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Low Latency Mode set to Ultra in the NVIDIA control panel to reduce input lag in close-range fights.
  • •Force maximum performance mode in 3D power management; in a game this lightweight, GPUs can stay at low clock states by default.
  • •You don't need to enable DLSS or any scaling: being Unreal Engine 3, Black Squad doesn't even support it.

AMD

  • •Disable Radeon Chill and Radeon Boost in the driver: these dynamic FPS-saving technologies add nothing in such a lightweight game.
  • •Enable Anti-Lag in the Adrenalin panel to reduce input latency in the precision duels that define the game.
  • •Set a high-performance profile instead of the default balanced mode, since Black Squad rarely saturates the GPU.

Sistema

  • •Enable "Best performance" power mode in Windows: being a low-consumption game, Windows tends to apply conservative power policies.
  • •Close third-party overlays; on such an old engine these processes can cause more micro-stuttering than the game's own graphical load.
  • •If playing on a laptop, force the use of the dedicated GPU in the system's graphics options.

5. Known game issues

Irregular FPS spikes on maps with heavy vegetation

On maps like Sandstorm or Ghost Town, foliage rendering can cause momentary framerate drops even on low settings, a problem inherited from Unreal Engine 3's vegetation system.

Audio desync in long matches

After extended play sessions, some users report a slight lag between positional sound effects and on-screen action, usually fixed by restarting the client.

Limited compatibility with high-refresh-rate monitors

The game's internal FPS cap in some client versions doesn't scale properly above 240Hz.

6. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a powerful GPU to play Black Squad at high FPS?▾
No. Black Squad runs on Unreal Engine 3, an engine designed for modest hardware, so even a current entry-level GPU can exceed 200-300 FPS.
Is it worth lowering vegetation density even if I lose some visual appeal?▾
Yes, without a doubt. Beyond the FPS gain, reducing grass density removes blind spots where opponents could be hiding while crouched.
Does Black Squad support DLSS or FSR?▾
No. Being built on Unreal Engine 3, an engine that predates these AI upscaling technologies, the game neither has them nor needs them.
Why is my framerate unstable if my PC is powerful?▾
In most cases it comes down to background software rather than any limitation of the game itself, since the UE3 engine barely demands modern resources.
