Age of Empires IV runs on an evolution of Relic's Essence Engine, the same technological lineage as Company of Heroes. Shadow Resolution

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: The competitive AoE IV community almost universally recommends Low shadows for ranked matches, since the visual impact is minimal compared to the stability gain in large battles.

Dynamic shadows from hundreds of units on screen are one of the biggest performance drains in large sieges. Lowering shadow quality reduces the shadow map resolution without eliminating shadows entirely.

Vegetation and Decoration Quality

Particle Effects

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Strong consensus among competitive players: it's precisely during the biggest FPS drops (sieges) that the most particles appear on screen, so lowering this setting directly tackles the problem.

Exclusive Fullscreen Mode

Recommended: Fullscreen · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Recommended unless you need to switch windows quickly; in tournaments and ranked play, most players use exclusive fullscreen for the extra stability.

Borderless Windowed mode adds Windows composition overhead that especially penalizes CPU spikes during massive battles. Exclusive mode avoids that overhead.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Terrain Draw Distance

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended by players on large maps (Continental, Black Forest); in 1v1 on smaller maps the impact is smaller.

On large 4v4 maps, reducing how much distant terrain gets rendered at full detail helps keep the framerate stable when the camera is zoomed far out while controlling multiple army groups.

Anti-aliasing

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Debated: some prefer keeping it on Medium for image quality in the campaign, but the competitive scene tends to disable it or keep it low to maximize clarity and FPS.

AoE IV's TAA has a non-trivial rendering cost and also introduces slight motion blur that makes it harder to distinguish small units at maximum game speed (2x-Fast). Lowering it improves both FPS and sharpness.

Texture Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Only relevant for GPUs with limited VRAM (4-6GB); on modern GPUs with more memory it can be left on High without a noticeable penalty.

Render Resolution (Scaling)

Recommended: 90 · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended as an emergency setting when hardware is limited; some tournament players on 1440p monitors drop to 85-90% to ensure high, stable FPS without sacrificing UI readability.

Slightly reducing the internal render resolution without touching UI resolution offers a notable FPS gain. Especially useful in large sieges where the GPU shares load with CPU spikes.

Water and Surface Reflections

NVIDIA

AMD

  • •Enable Radeon Anti-Lag to reduce input latency in critical fights, especially relevant in competitive 1v1 where every click counts.
  • •If you use an APU or integrated Radeon GPU, prioritize lowering Effects Quality and Shadow Quality before anything else, since they have the biggest impact on framerate in large battles with integrated hardware.
  • •Check that the Adrenalin driver's power mode is set to "Performance" and not silent/power-saving mode, which can limit GPU clocks during long matches.

  • •AoE IV is mostly a CPU-limited game: prioritize a processor with good single-thread performance over a powerful GPU, since pathfinding and AI for hundreds of units run on the CPU.

When the combined population of all players approaches the cap (200+ per player) and there are simultaneous fights in several parts of the map, framerate can drop drastically even on powerful systems, because the engine recalculates pathfinding for hundreds of units in real time. Lowering Shadow Quality and Effects Quality partially mitigates the problem, but the underlying bottleneck is the CPU.

Microstutter when using spectator mode or reviewing replays

Some players report periodic hitching when watching replays of long matches or using live spectator mode, especially when fast-forwarding quickly across the map. This happens because the game recalculates the full simulation instead of playing back a recorded video.

High single-core CPU usage on large maps

The engine doesn't distribute pathfinding and AI load evenly across all available cores, so a processor with fewer cores but better per-core performance can outperform a CPU with more cores but lower frequencies.
