How to improve FPS in VRChat (PC)

VRChat is a completely atypical case for an FPS optimization site: it's not a game with levels designed by a studio, but a social platform where thousands of creators upload their own worlds and avatars with no technical performance review whatsoever. That means your framerate can go from a stable 90 FPS to 15 FPS in a matter of seconds, simply by entering a crowded room or running into the wrong avatar. Optimizing VRChat isn't just about tweaking the graphics menu — it's about understanding how the Unity engine handles (or suffers under) unoptimized user-generated content.

Avatar Performance Rank

Recommended: On · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: It's the setting most recommended by the community itself and by VRChat Inc.
+35% FPS

VRChat ranks every avatar as Excellent, Good, Medium, Poor, or Very Poor based on polygon count, bones, shaders, and dynamic lights. Enabling the automatic impostor for Poor/Very Poor avatars replaces those models with a very low-cost flat silhouette.

Mirrors

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: High · Consensus: Total community consensus: disable mirrors except for the odd moment you need to check your own avatar.
+25% FPS

Mirrors in VRChat are famous for being the engine's most expensive element: every visible mirror forces the whole scene to be rendered a second time.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Highly recommended in social worlds and large rooms.
+15% FPS

Real-time dynamic shadows are costly in Unity, especially when the world has multiple poorly optimized dynamic lights set up by the creator.

Render Scale

Recommended: 80 · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common setting among VR users with modest hardware.
+20% FPS

Reducing internal render resolution below 100% directly lowers the pixel load the GPU has to process.

Frame Rate Limit

Recommended: 60 · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Recommended mainly for desktop mode; in VR, priority goes to keeping the headset's native refresh rate.
+10% FPS

VRChat in desktop mode isn't limited by the headset's refresh rate, so leaving the framerate uncapped makes the GPU constantly work at maximum with no real benefit.

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common trade-off setting; VR players tend to prioritize it more than desktop players.

Antialiasing in VRChat smooths the jagged edges typical of low-poly avatars and worlds.

Physbones / Dynamic Bones

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Highly recommended to disable or limit the physbones detection range in crowded rooms.

Bone physics systems used by many avatars consume CPU proportionally to the number of nearby avatars with physbones active.

Max Avatars at Full Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: A strong community recommendation for events, meetups, and hub worlds.
+25% FPS

VRChat lets you adjust how many avatars are rendered at full quality before the rest switch to a simplified version, prioritizing by distance.

Particle Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Especially recommended at raves, virtual concerts, and clubs.
+12% FPS

Many avatars and worlds use custom particle systems that may be poorly optimized by their creators.

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable low-power/performance mode in the NVIDIA control panel for VRChat, since it has very irregular load spikes.
  • •If you use VR mode with a compatible headset, enable NVIDIA Reflex where available.
  • •Keep drivers updated, especially after major VRChat changes (SDK3, Udon).

AMD

  • •Use Radeon Chill or per-profile FPS caps to avoid the GPU running at 100% in simple "Excellent" worlds.
  • •Check that Windows' graphics settings have VRChat.exe set to "High performance" if you're on a hybrid laptop.
  • •On older AMD cards, keep an eye on VRAM usage.

  • •The CPU matters more than usual in VRChat: physbone physics, spatial audio, and Udon logic are single-threaded loads.
  • •Install VRChat on an SSD: worlds and avatars are downloaded and cached constantly when entering new rooms.
  • •Close overlay applications since they compete directly for the same CPU VRChat needs.

Performance in VRChat can change radically from one instant to the next without touching a single setting, simply by entering a room with a poorly optimized avatar.

Progressive memory leak in long sessions

Many users report a gradual increase in RAM and VRAM usage the longer a session runs without restarting the client.

Custom shaders with very high hidden cost

The most popular third-party avatar shaders enable very advanced visual effects, but many creators enable dozens of features simultaneously without measuring their real cost.

Because in VRChat the biggest performance factor isn't your hardware but the content you're viewing, created with no optimization oversight whatsoever.
Does having a powerful GPU help if there are still FPS drops?▾
Yes it helps, but it doesn't make you immune: the problem isn't raw power but unoptimized content in the room you're in.
What is "Avatar Performance Rank" and why should I care?▾
It's the system VRChat uses to automatically classify every avatar by its technical complexity. Setting up impostors for Poor/Very Poor avatars is the single highest-impact FPS setting in the whole game.
Why do mirrors hurt performance so much?▾
Because technically, a mirror forces the engine to render the entire visible scene a second time from the reflected angle.
