There's no fighting volumetric shadows or ray tracing here: the real performance ceiling is the CPU, in how the game simulates hundreds of objects, crops, and NPCs every tick. The number one cause of FPS drops isn't the graphics card, but the pile of SMAPI mods and giant save files with thousands of placed items. This guide focuses on squeezing out those few real graphics settings and, above all, on managing mods and saves so the simulation doesn't choke.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Fullscreen / Window Mode
Playing in borderless windowed mode adds an extra layer of OS compositing that's noticeable on modest systems, especially laptops with integrated GPUs. Exclusive fullscreen reduces that overhead and avoids micro-hitches when switching scenes.
VSync

Every mod loaded by SMAPI adds C# scripting overhead that runs on every game tick, and this scales poorly once you stack dozens of content mods (NPCs, farm expansions, graphical overhauls). It's the most common cause of real FPS drops in this game, well above any graphics setting.
Content Patcher and HD texture mods
4K retexture packs or visual overhauls via Content Patcher multiply VRAM usage and asset load times, something ConcernedApe's original engine never accounted for. On systems with an integrated GPU or little VRAM this can cause noticeable stutter when entering new zones.
Save file size and age
Farms with thousands of placed objects, hundreds of simultaneous crops, or extremely large layouts (via farm-expansion mods) increase per-tick simulation work, especially during mass-harvest seasons. There's no menu setting for this: mitigation comes from clearing unnecessary objects or planning the layout carefully.
NPC behavior and event mods
Mods that add complex NPC AI routines, more simultaneous NPCs on screen, or custom events increase the number of per-tick calculations non-linearly. Combined with a farm heavily populated with animals and crops, they can generate noticeable frame drops in town during festivals.
Frame Skip / external FPS limiter
The game doesn't have a robust native FPS limiter in every version; using the NVIDIA/AMD panel limit or RivaTuner at 60 FPS keeps the GPU from working pointlessly hard in a 2D game and reduces power draw and heat with no visual cost.
