
How to improve FPS in Path of Exile 2 (PC)
Path of Exile 2 combines a proprietary graphics engine with a dynamic global illumination system and an ability/physics simulator that scales poorly with enemy density. In town or transit zones the game flies, but in endgame maps with monster hordes, summoner builds running several active minions, or chained ability combos with explosions, framerate can tank even with GPU headroom to spare. The key to optimizing PoE2 isn't just lowering resolution: it's understanding which settings hit the CPU bottleneck and which relieve the GPU.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +62% free FPS.
Global Illumination
Dynamic global illumination is the engine's most expensive graphics setting. Disabling it or leaving it on Shadows only delivers the game's single biggest FPS jump, especially in maps with many magic light sources.
Shadow Quality
Dynamic shadows on characters and minions are recalculated constantly in fights with multiple entities. Lowering quality reduces GPU and some CPU load without hurting combat readability much.
Effects Quality
Controls the density and resolution of ability particles: explosions, auras, projectiles, and area effects. In builds with heavy "screen clutter" (summoner, chained detonations), it's one of the settings with the biggest direct impact on perceived framerate during combat.
Shader Cache
PoE2 compiles shaders on the fly every time a new effect type appears. The default cache fills up fast and, once saturated, forces constant recompilations that cause micro-stutter. Expanding it in the NVIDIA control panel or resetting it after every new AMD driver eliminates most of the stutter in the first few hours of play.
Engine Multithreading
Distributes AI, physics, and collision calculations across multiple CPU cores instead of saturating one or two threads. On CPUs with 6 cores or more, it's the single switch with the biggest impact in maps with many enemies.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Dynamic Resolution
Adjusts render resolution in real time to hold an FPS target, dropping sharpness only during load spikes (hordes, explosions) and recovering it in calmer areas. Pairs well with upscaling enabled.
Anti-Aliasing
Temporal-accumulation antialiasing has a moderate GPU cost. Dropping from Ultra to Medium reduces load without visible jaggies at 1440p or above.
Ambient Occlusion
Ambient occlusion shading adds depth indoors and in dungeons, but its cost doesn't pay off in open outdoor maps where it's barely noticeable.
Physics Simulation Detail
Controls the fidelity of cloth physics, environmental particles, and destructible debris. In large hordes with many simultaneous bodies and physics effects, lowering it directly eases CPU load.
Texture Quality
Textures depend mainly on available VRAM rather than compute power. On GPUs with 8GB or more it can stay on High with no real FPS penalty.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
NVIDIA DLSS
+30% FPSDLSS 2 (upscaling) has been natively supported since early access. Quality mode offers the best balance, with Balanced as an alternative when CPU is already the limiting factor and you want to ease rendering load without losing too much sharpness.
AMD FSR
+25% FPSFSR is available for every GPU, including NVIDIA and Intel cards. Its image quality is somewhat below DLSS in fast motion, but in mass combat with particles the difference is barely noticeable.
Intel XeSS
+22% FPSSupport added for Intel Arc GPUs and also compatible with other brands. Performs similarly to FSR in quality, with better behavior on Intel cards thanks to dedicated acceleration.

NVIDIA
- •Expand Shader Cache Size to 100GB or Unlimited from the NVIDIA Control Panel to reduce shader-compilation stutter in the first hours of each league.
- •Enable DLSS in Quality mode as your first option before touching shadow or lighting settings.
- •Always update to the latest Game Ready Driver after a major PoE2 patch, since GGG often introduces new effects that trigger shader recompilation.
AMD
- •Manually reset the shader cache from AMD Software after installing a new driver, since it doesn't always regenerate automatically and can cause recurring stutter.
- •Use FSR in Quality mode together with Dynamic Resolution to absorb load spikes during hordes without losing sharpness across the rest of the map.
- •In summoner builds or combos with many effects, prioritize lowering Effects Quality before Anti-Aliasing: the FPS savings are bigger.
Intel
- •Enable Resizable BAR in the BIOS: on Arc GPUs it makes a noticeably bigger difference in PoE2 than in most games.
- •Use XeSS instead of FSR if you have an Arc GPU, since it takes advantage of dedicated hardware acceleration.
- •Verify the graphics driver is on its latest version before reporting FPS drops: Intel has released several optimizations specific to PoE2's engine.

- •Install the game on an SSD: asset loading and map streaming in open zones depend heavily on read speed to avoid pop-in and micro-stutter.
- •Close third-party overlays (Discord, browsers, recording software) during hordes or map bosses, since they compete for the same CPU cores as the game's physics engine.
- •If you run a summoner build or one with many chained effects, prioritize a CPU with strong per-core performance over a more powerful GPU: the real limit is usually the processor.

Shader-compilation stutter in the first hours
When entering new zones or using abilities for the first time each session, the game compiles shaders on the fly, causing noticeable micro-stutter. Expanding the driver's shader cache reduces the problem a lot, though it doesn't eliminate it entirely.
FPS drops in hordes and summoner builds
The global illumination system and physics calculations don't scale well with many simultaneous on-screen entities. Builds with multiple active minions or chained ability combos can drop framerate well below what the GPU alone would allow.
High VRAM usage at high resolutions with textures on Ultra
At 1440p and 4K with Texture Quality on Ultra, VRAM consumption can approach the limit of 8GB GPUs, causing stuttering from memory swapping in maps with lots of loaded assets.
