1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Ray Tracing / Global Illumination Quality
The ray-traced global illumination system is by far the game's biggest performance drain. Frostbite calculates real-time light bounces to create that sense of depth in Thedas' interiors, but the GPU cost is enormous. Disabling it returns to traditional probe-based global illumination, which still looks good.
Shadow Quality
Shadows on Ultra enable high-resolution cascades and extra contact shadows that are barely noticeable except in very close static screenshots. Lowering to Medium keeps sharp foreground shadows without penalizing framerate as much in outdoor zones like the Arlathan forests.
Depth of Field
Depth-of-field blur in dialogue and exploration adds unnecessary post-processing cost for most players, on top of blurring environment details many prefer to see sharp.
Motion Blur
Motion blur in fast combat with Rook dodging and chaining abilities tends to disorient more than convey speed, and its performance cost, though smaller, is entirely avoidable.
Volumetric Fog Quality
Volumetric fog in zones like the Rivain swamps or the Fade caves has a noticeable rendering cost on Ultra due to layered sampling. Medium preserves the atmosphere without doubling the volumetric shader cost.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Texture Quality / Texture Pool Size
Ultra reserves a considerable VRAM pool designed for 12GB+ cards; on 8GB GPUs it can cause microstutter from texture streaming when the buffer saturates, especially in dense urban zones like Minrathous. High keeps nearly identical detail with much lower memory usage.
Effects Quality
Spell effects, elemental explosions, and companion auras generate a particle load that scales poorly in fights with 4-5 characters casting abilities at once. Medium reduces overlapping particle density without removing the visual impact of key hits.
Anti-Aliasing (TAA)
DLAA offers superior sharpness at the cost of GPU usage equivalent to rendering at native resolution with full temporal reconstruction. On performance-tuned GPUs, Frostbite's standard TAA still does a good job removing aliasing without that extra cost.
View Distance
Draw distance on Ultra loads vegetation and terrain detail much further than the player perceives during normal gameplay, especially in open zones like the Free Marches. High trims that margin without generating noticeable pop-in in most scenarios.
Screen Space Reflections
Screen-space reflections are most noticeable on wet surfaces and polished metal armor; on Ultra the extra sampling barely improves reflection definition but does increase per-frame post-processing cost.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
DLSS 3 (with Frame Generation on RTX 40)
+45% FPSOn RTX 40-series GPUs, DLSS 3 with Frame Generation is the most powerful option: upscaling in Quality or Balanced mode already gives a notable jump, and enabling Frame Generation can nearly double perceived framerate during exploration sequences. In fast combat the extra input lag is noticeable but manageable with V-Sync on. On RTX 20/30 series only upscaling is available, without frame generation.
FSR 3
+35% FPSFSR 3 works on any GPU, including AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel, and offers competent image quality in Quality mode, though with a bit more ghosting on hair and particle effects than DLSS. It includes its own hardware-independent Frame Generation, useful for RX 6000/7000 in VFX-heavy scenes.
XeSS
+30% FPSXeSS performs especially well on Intel Arc GPUs thanks to XMX hardware acceleration, and offers a solid alternative on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, albeit at a somewhat higher performance cost than DLSS at the same mode. A good option if you'd rather avoid FSR's ghosting in foliage-heavy scenes.

- •On RTX 4070 or above, you can afford GI with Ray Tracing on High combined with DLSS Quality while keeping 60+ FPS at 1440p.
AMD
- •Use Anti-Lag+ from Adrenalin to offset the added latency from FSR 3 Frame Generation in intense fights.
- •RX 7000 cards with Smart Access Memory enabled gain several extra FPS in geometry-heavy scenes, like Minrathous' urban zones.
- •If you use an RX 6000, avoid FSR 3 Frame Generation: support is less stable and can introduce visible artifacts during fast camera transitions.
