How to improve FPS in Dragon Age: The Veilguard (PC)

Dragon Age: The Veilguard runs on a heavily modified version of Frostbite, the same engine behind Battlefield and the latest Mass Effect titles, so it inherits its clearly GPU-bound nature. BioWare has polished optimization considerably compared to earlier Frostbite titles, with a solid baseline even on mid-range hardware, but the dynamic global illumination system (similar in philosophy to Lumen) and combat scenes with multiple allies, spells, and simultaneous particles can make the GPU sweat at high resolutions. VRAM usage is also something to watch if you max out texture quality. With the right settings and a good upscaler, it's perfectly playable at a stable 60 FPS even on mid-to-high-end GPUs. Ray Tracing / Global Illumination Quality

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: The community agrees the visual jump from GI with RT enabled isn't worth the cost, especially below an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT.
+22% FPS

The ray-traced global illumination system is by far the game's biggest performance drain. Frostbite calculates real-time light bounces to create that sense of depth in Thedas' interiors, but the GPU cost is enormous. Disabling it returns to traditional probe-based global illumination, which still looks good.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Unanimous among optimizers: Medium is the sweet spot, Ultra is reserved only for top-tier GPUs.

Shadows on Ultra enable high-resolution cascades and extra contact shadows that are barely noticeable except in very close static screenshots. Lowering to Medium keeps sharp foreground shadows without penalizing framerate as much in outdoor zones like the Arlathan forests.

Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A small but free gain: practically everyone disables it without a second thought.

Depth-of-field blur in dialogue and exploration adds unnecessary post-processing cost for most players, on top of blurring environment details many prefer to see sharp.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Disabling it is nearly unanimous, both for performance and for visual clarity in combat.

Motion blur in fast combat with Rook dodging and chaining abilities tends to disorient more than convey speed, and its performance cost, though smaller, is entirely avoidable.

Volumetric Fog Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to lower it one notch on any build below high-end; the visual impact is minimal.

Volumetric fog in zones like the Rivain swamps or the Fade caves has a noticeable rendering cost on Ultra due to layered sampling. Medium preserves the atmosphere without doubling the volumetric shader cost.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality / Texture Pool Size

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Highly recommended to lower it to High on any GPU with 8GB of VRAM or less to avoid streaming stutter.
+6% FPS

Ultra reserves a considerable VRAM pool designed for 12GB+ cards; on 8GB GPUs it can cause microstutter from texture streaming when the buffer saturates, especially in dense urban zones like Minrathous. High keeps nearly identical detail with much lower memory usage.

Effects Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: An aesthetically controversial setting, but necessary on mid-range GPUs to avoid sharp drops during big fights.

Spell effects, elemental explosions, and companion auras generate a particle load that scales poorly in fights with 4-5 characters casting abilities at once. Medium reduces overlapping particle density without removing the visual impact of key hits.

Anti-Aliasing (TAA)

Recommended: TAA · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: DLAA is only recommended if you already have FPS to spare; for everyone else, TAA is the sensible choice.

DLAA offers superior sharpness at the cost of GPU usage equivalent to rendering at native resolution with full temporal reconstruction. On performance-tuned GPUs, Frostbite's standard TAA still does a good job removing aliasing without that extra cost.

View Distance

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A safe, practically unnoticeable reduction except in very open landscapes viewed from height.
+5% FPS

Draw distance on Ultra loads vegetation and terrain detail much further than the player perceives during normal gameplay, especially in open zones like the Free Marches. High trims that margin without generating noticeable pop-in in most scenarios.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Reduction recommended unless you have plenty of FPS headroom; the visual change is subtle.

Screen-space reflections are most noticeable on wet surfaces and polished metal armor; on Ultra the extra sampling barely improves reflection definition but does increase per-frame post-processing cost.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

DLSS 3 (with Frame Generation on RTX 40)

On RTX 40-series GPUs, DLSS 3 with Frame Generation is the most powerful option: upscaling in Quality or Balanced mode already gives a notable jump, and enabling Frame Generation can nearly double perceived framerate during exploration sequences. In fast combat the extra input lag is noticeable but manageable with V-Sync on. On RTX 20/30 series only upscaling is available, without frame generation.

FSR 3

+35% FPS

FSR 3 works on any GPU, including AMD, NVIDIA, and Intel, and offers competent image quality in Quality mode, though with a bit more ghosting on hair and particle effects than DLSS. It includes its own hardware-independent Frame Generation, useful for RX 6000/7000 in VFX-heavy scenes.

XeSS

+30% FPS

XeSS performs especially well on Intel Arc GPUs thanks to XMX hardware acceleration, and offers a solid alternative on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, albeit at a somewhat higher performance cost than DLSS at the same mode. A good option if you'd rather avoid FSR's ghosting in foliage-heavy scenes.

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Reflex from the graphics menu to reduce input latency, especially if you use Frame Generation in combat.
  • •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers: NVIDIA has released several Frostbite-specific optimization patches since launch.
  • •On RTX 4070 or above, you can afford GI with Ray Tracing on High combined with DLSS Quality while keeping 60+ FPS at 1440p.

AMD

  • •Use Anti-Lag+ from Adrenalin to offset the added latency from FSR 3 Frame Generation in intense fights.
  • •RX 7000 cards with Smart Access Memory enabled gain several extra FPS in geometry-heavy scenes, like Minrathous' urban zones.
  • •If you use an RX 6000, avoid FSR 3 Frame Generation: support is less stable and can introduce visible artifacts during fast camera transitions.

Sistema

  • •Install the game on SSD (preferably NVMe): high-resolution texture streaming in open zones causes noticeable pop-in on mechanical hard drives.
  • •Make sure you have at least 16GB of RAM; with 8GB the game resorts to swap memory and generates constant microstutter during asset streaming.
  • •Close third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner with a complex OSD) if you notice occasional frametime drops in effect-heavy fights.

Shader compilation stutter on first launch

When launching the game for the first time or after a driver update, Frostbite compiles shaders in the background, causing microstutters during the first 20-30 minutes of play. This is normal and disappears once the cache is complete.

VRAM leaks in long sessions with Ray Tracing enabled

Some users with 8GB of VRAM report progressive framerate degradation after several hours with GI Ray Tracing active, resolved by restarting the game. Related to texture-pool management in very long sessions.

The main social zone, with numerous animated companions and NPCs at once, causes CPU-bound drops on low or mid-low-end processors, independent of graphics settings.

Is DLSS, FSR, or XeSS better in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?▾
If you have an RTX 20 series or newer, DLSS offers the best image quality with less ghosting. On AMD or Intel, FSR 3 and XeSS respectively are the recommended options; FSR also works well as a cross-platform alternative if you don't have an NVIDIA GPU.
Is it worth enabling Ray Tracing in this game?▾

That social zone is more CPU-limited than GPU-limited because of the number of animated NPCs at once. If your processor is low or mid-low-end, you'll notice more drops there than in combat, regardless of your graphics settings.
