
How to improve FPS in Diablo IV (PC)
Diablo IV runs on Blizzard's proprietary engine, heavily dependent on raw GPU power and, above all, on available VRAM. In cities like Kyovashad or during a Helltide with 20-30 players on screen, the game can generate CPU spikes from asset streaming and networking, but the usual bottleneck remains the graphics card and its video memory. With the right settings you can gain between 15% and 30% FPS without sacrificing much visual fidelity.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +26% free FPS.
Texture Quality
Ultra can consume more than 10GB of VRAM at 1440p/4K. If your card has 8GB or less, dropping to High or Medium avoids VRAM-full stuttering with barely any noticeable difference in texture detail during combat.
Local Shadow Quality
Local dynamic shadows are among the engine's most expensive elements, especially in areas with many enemies and torches. Dropping from High to Medium reduces rendering cost without hurting ground readability much in dense fights.
Fog Quality
Volumetric fog in zones like Fractured Peaks or Helltides has a disproportionate GPU cost relative to its visual impact. Lowering it is one of the most cost-effective ways to gain stable FPS.
SSAO (Ambient Occlusion)
Ambient occlusion on High adds very subtle contact shading that's barely noticeable during active gameplay, but has a measurable cost on mid-range GPUs.
V-Sync
V-Sync adds input lag and can cap your framerate below what your GPU can deliver. If you have a monitor with adaptive sync, enable it in your GPU's control panel instead of using in-game V-Sync.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Physics Quality
Affects cloth, particle, and environment destruction simulation. In Helltides with a lot of ability effects on screen, dropping it from High to Medium smooths out frametime spikes.
Reflections Quality
Reflections in puddles, ice, and wet surfaces use screen-space reflections, expensive at high resolutions. Lowering them is barely noticeable except when looking straight at the ground.
View Distance
Reduces pop-in of vegetation and distant objects in exchange for FPS. In open areas like Scosglen the impact is bigger than in enclosed dungeons, where you can keep it higher at no real cost.
Particle Quality
The setting with the biggest impact in Nightmare Dungeons and Helltides, where dozens of abilities generate simultaneous particles. Dropping it from High to Medium is the difference between a stable framerate or dips below 40 FPS in big fights.
Global Illumination
Dynamic global illumination has a high GPU cost, especially indoors with many light sources (dungeons, catacombs). Dropping it to Medium keeps good atmosphere with a notable frametime saving.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
NVIDIA DLSS 3 (with Frame Generation on RTX 40)
+45% FPSDiablo IV supports full DLSS 3. On RTX 40 with Frame Generation the FPS jump is very large, and since this is an isometric-camera ARPG, the added input lag is less noticeable than in shooters, so it's worth enabling.
AMD FSR 2 / FSR 3
+30% FPSA good alternative on AMD or mixed GPUs. FSR 3 with frame generation is already available; in 'Quality' or 'Balanced' mode the result is solid even at 1440p.
Intel XeSS
+28% FPSSupported since launch, works well on Arc but also on NVIDIA/AMD GPUs as an FSR alternative. Performance is slightly below DLSS in image quality at close range.
Dynamic Resolution Scaling
+15% FPSThe game's native setting that automatically lowers internal resolution to maintain a target FPS. Useful as a safety net in massive Helltides, though dedicated upscaling (DLSS/FSR/XeSS) gives better image quality for the same performance.
4. Tips by GPU
NVIDIA
- •Enable Reflex in the options menu: it noticeably reduces input lag in fights with heavy ability spam, at no FPS cost.
- •On 8GB GPUs (RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070) avoid Ultra Texture Quality; use High at most to avoid VRAM stuttering.
- •Always update to NVIDIA's latest Game Ready driver before each new Diablo IV season, as they usually include specific optimizations.
AMD
- •Enable Anti-Lag in the Adrenalin software to offset the input lag added by some particle effects in crowded zones.
- •RX 6000/7000 cards with 12GB or more of VRAM can keep Texture Quality High with no issues; monitor VRAM usage in Adrenalin if you notice micro-stutter.
- •FSR 3 with Frame Generation works especially well on RX 7000 to compensate for lower shadow-rendering performance compared to NVIDIA.

- •Install the game on an SSD (NVMe preferred): texture streaming when entering cities or dungeons is I/O-intensive and causes pop-in and micro-stutter on an HDD.
- •Close third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner) if you notice occasional FPS drops when opening the map or inventory.
- •Make sure you have at least 16GB of RAM; with 8GB the game falls back on virtual memory in zones with heavy asset streaming, generating micro-stutter.

Crashes and stuttering from full VRAM on 8GB GPUs
With Texture Quality on Ultra, 1440p/4K resolution, and several seasonal textures loaded, the game can exceed 8GB of VRAM and cause severe framerate drops or unexpected crashes. Blizzard even added in-game warnings about this.
