
How to improve FPS in ARK: Survival Evolved (PC)
ARK: Survival Evolved remains, years after its 2017 launch, one of the toughest stress tests for any PC. Studio Wildcard's Unreal Engine 4 never quite digested the combination of dense jungles, hundreds of dinosaurs with active AI, and tribe bases packed with physics-driven structures. Unlike its remaster, ARK: Survival Ascended, this original title doesn't have modern scaling like DLSS or FSR, so all room for improvement depends on tuning native graphics parameters well. On official servers with high population and dinosaurs nearby, even a powerful GPU can suffer severe FPS drops. Here we go over what to tweak to get maximum performance without sacrificing the visuals that matter.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

General Quality (View Distance)
This setting controls the render distance for terrain, vegetation, and dinosaurs all at once, making it the game's heaviest load multiplier. Dropping it from Epic/High to Medium drastically reduces the number of entities and polygons the CPU and GPU must process per frame. On open maps like The Island or Ragnarok the impact is even bigger due to the number of visible biomes.
Foliage/Grass Density
ARK's vegetation uses a massive instancing system that saturates both geometric processing and shading, especially in jungle and redwood forest areas. Dropping it to Low removes much of the decorative foliage without affecting gameplay, since real grass collision is kept separate. It's the number-one culprit behind microstutters when crossing wooded areas.
Shadow Quality
ARK's dynamic shadows recalculate full cascades every time a dinosaur, player, or structure moves within the render radius, which is constant in populated areas. Dropping quality to Low reduces the resolution of those cascades and the number of objects casting dynamic shadows. The visual impact shows mostly at shadow edges, not overall lighting.
Anti-Aliasing
ARK's TAA is expensive at high resolutions and adds a somewhat blurry smoothing that many players already consider dispensable. Dropping from Epic to Medium reduces per-frame post-processing cost without generating excessive aliasing if playing at 1440p or higher. At 1080p the stair-stepping effect is more noticeable, so it's worth testing before dropping it all the way.
Ambient Occlusion
ARK's ambient occlusion is calculated across all visible geometry, including instanced vegetation, which makes it disproportionately expensive for the visual result it provides. Disabling it removes that subtle shading in corners and bases but frees up a considerable FPS margin in cave interiors and large structures. It's one of the first settings the community recommends for lower mid-range PCs.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Mesh Quality Level
Controls the polygon detail level of dinosaurs, structures, and world props, with a direct impact on VRAM usage. In large tribe bases with hundreds of placed structures, dropping this setting to Medium noticeably reduces hitching when turning the camera. Dinosaur models lose some skin texture definition, but the recognizable silhouette is kept.
Water Quality
ARK's water uses real-time reflections and refractions that penalize especially on coastal maps like The Island or The Center, where large ocean surfaces are always on screen. Dropping it to Low replaces those effects with a simplified shader, freeing up constant FPS during navigation and fishing. The water remains visually functional, just losing the more elaborate specular shine.
Post Processing
This block groups color grading, vignette, and bloom effects that, while not individually heavy, add up to the total rendering pipeline cost per frame. Dropping it to Medium keeps a coherent color palette while trimming the most superfluous effects. It's a secondary setting but useful once you've already squeezed out the rest of the main options.
View Distance (dinosaurs/actors)
Independent of General Quality, this parameter specifically affects how many dinosaurs and players with active AI get loaded and simulated at a distance. On PvE servers with tamed-dinosaur farms near the base, lowering it directly reduces CPU load from pathing calculations. It's especially noticeable on maps with high fauna density like Ragnarok or Valguero.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
4. Tips by GPU
NVIDIA
- •Enable the "Prefer Maximum Performance" mode in the NVIDIA control panel specifically for ARK, since the game doesn't always saturate the GPU on its own.
- •Force an FPS cap (say 60 or 90) from the control panel to avoid voltage and temperature spikes during occasional vegetation-streaming stutters.
- •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers before long base-building sessions, since Wildcard has released patches that change shader behavior fairly often.
AMD
- •Enable Radeon Anti-Lag to offset the input latency introduced by the UE4 engine in areas with high NPC and structure density.
- •Check that the Chill power-saving mode isn't unnecessarily limiting FPS during boss fights, where you need sustained performance.
- •Use Radeon Image Sharpening as a lightweight substitute when lowering render resolution, since the game has no native upscaling of its own.

When moving quickly on a flying mount over dense jungle areas, the engine doesn't always preload vegetation in time, generating noticeable stutters even on powerful hardware. Lowering Foliage Density and using an SSD noticeably reduces how often these cuts happen.
FPS drop in large tribe bases
Structures with collision physics and the dozens of dinosaurs stored near a large base generate a CPU load that scales poorly, causing very low FPS exactly where the player spends the most time. There's no full fix, only mitigation by lowering Mesh Quality and View Distance.
