War Robots: Frontiers brings Pixonic's saga of mech combat to PC with Unreal Engine 5, adding destructible environments, dynamic lighting, and massive battles between giant robots. Being a free-to-play live-service title, it's designed to scale from modest rigs up to high-end configurations. Large-scale battles with multiple mechs firing energy weapons, missiles, and simultaneous explosions generate very demanding GPU load spikes, especially when cover or terrain gets destroyed. With the right settings for effects, shadows, and destruction quality, you can double the framerate without losing combat readability.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +65% free FPS.
Effects Quality
Particle effects from explosions, missiles, and energy weapons are Frontiers' biggest bottleneck in group combat. Lowering this setting drastically reduces the number of simultaneous particles rendered without eliminating the essential visual feedback from impacts.
Shadow Quality
UE5's dynamic shadows on destructible structures and large mechs are expensive to calculate in real time. Dropping to Low removes much of the shadow recalculation when the environment changes due to destruction.
Destruction/Physics Quality
Terrain and structure destruction is one of Frontiers' hallmarks, but its real-time physics simulation hits CPU and GPU hard on large maps.
View Distance
Frontiers' maps are wide open with long sightlines for ranged mech combat. Reducing the draw distance for vegetation and far terrain detail frees up GPU.
Post-Processing
Effects like bloom, motion blur, and vignetting add per-frame shader load without providing any competitive advantage. Lowering this setting also improves visual clarity during intense explosions.

Texture Quality
Unlike effects and shadows, Frontiers' textures depend more on VRAM than on raw compute power. On GPUs with 6GB or more of VRAM, it can stay on High with no relevant penalty.
Anti-Aliasing (TSR/DLAA)
Unreal Engine 5's native TSR is costlier than traditional TAA but offers better image stability in motion, crucial when mechs rotate turrets quickly.
Global Illumination (Lumen)
Lumen calculates real-time indirect lighting, which is especially expensive indoors in destructible interiors where light changes based on destroyed geometry.
Foliage/Vegetation Density
Dense vegetation on outdoor maps forces the engine to render thousands of elements that also react to nearby explosions. Reducing its density frees up GPU and improves visibility of enemy mechs.

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

AMD FSR 3
+35% FPSFSR 3 works on any GPU regardless of manufacturer and offers a notable gain, though with somewhat more visible ghosting on mech edges during fast turns.
Intel XeSS
+32% FPSXeSS delivers good image quality on Arc GPUs thanks to its XMX hardware acceleration, and works reasonably well on GPUs from other brands too via its DP4a mode.

NVIDIA
- •Enable Reflex in the graphics menu to reduce input latency in close mech combat.
- •Update to the latest Game Ready drivers, since Frontiers gets frequent patches that usually require specific optimizations.
- •On RTX 40-series cards, prioritize DLSS 3 with Frame Generation over forcing Ultra on native effects or shadows.
AMD
- •Enable Anti-Lag+ from Adrenalin to offset the latency added by FSR 3 in fast combat.
- •Check that the GPU's power mode is set to "Performance" in Adrenalin, since the balanced profile can limit clocks under intense particle loads.
- •On VRAM-limited RDNA2/RDNA3 GPUs, prioritize lowering Texture Quality before Effects Quality if you notice stutters rather than sustained drops.

- •Install the game on an SSD: Frontiers' maps load a lot of destruction assets and texture streaming that hurts a lot on an HDD.
- •Close third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner) if you notice micro-stutters, since they compete for resources with the UE5 engine.

High VRAM usage at high Texture Quality
On GPUs with 4GB of VRAM or less, raising texture quality above Medium can cause stuttering spikes from video memory saturation.
