How to improve FPS in Resident Evil Village (PC)

Resident Evil Village runs on RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary engine that since Resident Evil 7 has earned a reputation as one of the best-optimized in the industry: excellent scaling on modest hardware, near-instant loading times with SSD, and a baseline performance that rarely falls below expectations for its tier. Even so, Lady Dimitrescu's castle and its halls packed with gothic geometry, tapestries, and detailed statues, along with optional ray tracing in reflections and shadows, demand specific tweaks if you're aiming for stable 60 fps or want to push a high-refresh-rate panel.

⚠️ Known for: Being one of the most-cited examples of "good AAA optimization": it runs smoothly even on entry-level GPUs and on Steam Deck, in contrast to many releases from the same era plagued by shader-compilation stuttering.

Ray Tracing (Reflections and Shadows)

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: The community agrees this is the setting with the best cost/benefit ratio: it's barely noticeable while moving and frees up a considerable FPS margin, even on mid-range RTX cards.
+25% FPS

RE Village's ray tracing affects reflections on wet surfaces (very present in the castle and sewers) and shadows from certain light sources. The visual impact is notable on puddles and metal armor, but the performance cost is high for what it adds outside of static screenshots.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: One of the most recommended settings in technical guides because the visual jump between Medium and Max is minimal, while the FPS cost is disproportionate.

RE Engine renders high-resolution dynamic shadows for torches, candles, and the player's flashlight, key elements in the horror atmosphere. Lowering from Max to Medium reduces shadow map resolution without introducing visible jagged edges on the castle floor.

Volumetric Fog

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common recommendation on optimization forums: the difference between High and Medium is hard to notice except in side-by-side comparisons.

Volumetric fog is used a lot in outdoor areas like the village and around the lake with Moreau, plus humid interiors. On Medium it keeps atmospheric density while reducing per-pixel raymarching cost.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Turning it off is nearly unanimous in the community, both for performance and for preferring visual clarity in combat.

Motion blur in RE Village is subtle compared to other Capcom titles, but it still consumes a small percentage of performance in post-processing with no gameplay value in a first-person survival horror.

Mesh Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Optimization guides agree that Max is only noticeable in the game's photo mode, not during normal play.

Controls the geometric detail level of objects and characters, very relevant in the castle's rooms packed with furniture and gothic ornamentation. High keeps foreground models sharp and only reduces the detail of distant background elements.

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Resolution

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Highly recommended on cards with limited VRAM (RTX 3050/3060, RX 6600); on cards with 10GB+ you can leave it at Max with no penalty.

Textures on Max demand a fair amount of VRAM, especially in the Dimitrescu castle with its high-resolution tapestries and stone surfaces. On GPUs with 6-8GB, lowering to High avoids microstutters from VRAM swapping without a very noticeable loss of sharpness on screen.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Standard recommendation for anyone not using RT: the savings are consistent and the visual downgrade is barely noticeable outside of highly reflective surfaces.

When ray tracing is disabled, reflections are calculated via SSR. Medium keeps coherent reflections on wet floors and glass without the full-resolution cost of Max.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: SSAO Medium · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Technical benchmarks place this setting as medium-high performance impact with a minor visual difference except in close-up zoom.
+6% FPS

HBAO+ adds more precise ambient occlusion in the castle's corners and nooks, but its cost isn't negligible on mid-range GPUs. SSAO Medium preserves the sense of depth in dark interiors at a lower cost.

Mesh Animation Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: A rarely discussed setting but with consistent gains reported in comparative tests.
+4% FPS

Affects the smoothness of animations for secondary characters and enemies on screen, something fairly minor given that RE Village's encounters tend to have few simultaneous enemies compared to a wave-based shooter.

Render Scale

Recommended: 90 · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended alternative when FSR 1.0 isn't available or you'd rather avoid the typical halo effect of simple spatial upscalers.

Lowering the internal render scale slightly reduces pixel load without resorting to AI-based upscaling, useful on GPUs without quality DLSS/FSR. RE Engine maintains good sharpness even at 90% thanks to its TAA.

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS

RE Village has included DLSS since launch, integrated alongside ray tracing. In Balanced or Performance mode at 1440p/4K it offers a notable FPS gain with solid image quality; in fast motion it can introduce slight minor ghosting in Ethan's or Lady Dimitrescu's hair.

AMD FSR 1.0

+25% FPS

A spatial (not temporal) upscaling implementation, available for any GPU regardless of manufacturer. It's noticeably inferior to DLSS in sharpness, with visible halos on the edges of thin objects; recommended only in Performance/Ultra Performance as a last resort.

NVIDIA DLSS 3 Frame Generation

+45% FPS

Added in a later update for RTX 40-series GPUs. It doubles perceived frame count, very effective for pushing the game to 120+ fps on high-refresh-rate monitors, though in a survival horror the added latency can be slightly noticeable in fast melee combat.

NVIDIA

  • •Enable Reflex if your GPU is RTX: it reduces input latency, useful in the melee fights against Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters.
  • •On RTX 3050/3060 with 6-8GB of VRAM, prioritize lowering textures to High before touching other graphics settings: it's the real bottleneck in the castle.
  • •DLSS in Quality mode is the best option on RTX 20/30 series to hold 60 fps at 1440p with ray tracing enabled without sacrificing sharpness.

AMD

  • •The RX 6000/7000 series handle RE Engine's pure rasterization well; save the ray tracing performance margin for exploration scenes, not combat.
  • •If you use FSR, combine it with a slightly higher render scale (85-90%) within the FSR option itself to minimize aliasing on castle details.
  • •Smart Access Memory (Resizable BAR) provides a measurable improvement in RE Village; verify it's enabled in the BIOS alongside an updated AMD driver.

Slight ghosting with DLSS on hair and particles

In DLSS Performance modes, character hair and certain particles can show a slight ghost trail during fast camera movements; minimized by using Quality or Balanced mode.
