
How to improve FPS in Path of Exile (PC)

Unlike most modern games, the bottleneck here is almost never the GPU: the engine processes particle physics, projectile collisions, and skill logic on a single main CPU thread. 1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +80% free FPS.
Reduced Particle Effects (Same Player)
This option drastically reduces the number of particles generated by your own character and your minions, which is exactly the source of the "juiced map lag" in summoner, totem, or trap builds. It's probably the single most important setting in the game for anyone playing dense endgame content. There's a visual impact, but it's far smaller than the benefit to framerate stability.
Full Screen
Playing in exclusive fullscreen instead of borderless windowed mode reduces overhead from the Windows compositor and improves frame sync. In an engine so dependent on a single CPU thread, every millisecond saved in the presentation pipeline counts. The difference is more noticeable in juiced maps where the CPU is already at its limit.
Shadow Quality
Dynamic shadows in PoE have a disproportionate cost relative to their real visual contribution, especially in an isometric view where details are barely appreciated. Dropping to Low frees up both CPU and GPU with barely any noticeable difference in actual gameplay. It's one of the settings with the best benefit-to-visual-sacrifice ratio in the game.
Anti-Aliasing
Edge smoothing in PoE uses a post-processing method that can add noticeable blur to the UI and skill sprites without contributing much given the fixed isometric zoom. Disabling it also helps keep text and status-effect icons sharper amid the chaos of a juiced map. The performance saving is modest but free.
Ground Effects Visibility
Poison, fire, ice puddles, and other ground effects pile up fast in fights with high monster density or long boss fights, and each is a separately rendered particle layer. Reducing their visibility not only improves FPS but also helps you better distinguish real ground hazards amid the visual noise. Many speedrunners and endgame players enable this by default.

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Effects Quality / Particle Quality
This is the most aggressive option available and controls the overall density of skill particles, explosions, and ambient effects throughout the game, not just your own. Dropping to Low has a much more noticeable visual impact than the previous options, since flashy builds like area-skill ones lose a good chunk of their spectacle. Even so, in truly juiced maps with several players or events like Breach and Legion, it can be the difference between playing and not being able to see your own character.
Weather Effects
Zones with rain, snow, or fog add an extra layer of ambient particles that combine with combat particles in real time. Disabling these weather effects frees up some CPU headroom in specific map zones, especially in campaign acts with heavy weather. The visual impact is low since these effects are purely ambient and don't affect gameplay.
Vsync
V-Sync adds input latency and can artificially cap framerate at moments when it's already hard to keep FPS high, like in juiced maps. It's preferable to disable it and use your GPU control panel's FPS limit or the game's own framerate cap if you want to avoid tearing. In a game so dependent on single-thread CPU response, V-Sync's extra latency is especially noticeable in fast fights.
Player Effects Density (Party)
When playing in a party, each teammate with their own summoner, totem, or area-skill build exponentially multiplies the particle load your CPU must process. This setting specifically controls how many other players' effects get rendered, and it's essential in group endgame play where 3-6 players juicing maps together can tank anyone's framerate. The visual impact is medium since you lose some of your teammates' build spectacle.

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
