How to improve FPS in Grim Dawn (PC)

Grim Dawn runs on a heavily evolved version of the Titan Quest engine, so in terms of raw rendering it's a lightweight game that any modern GPU handles without breaking a sweat. The real problem shows up in the endgame content: Crucible, Shattered Realm, and multiplayer runs with summoner builds or status-effect stacking generate a brutal amount of particles, auras, and floating damage numbers on screen at once. That's where the bottleneck stops being the GPU and becomes the CPU, which has to process hundreds of simultaneous entities and effects. This guide focuses on taming those particle spikes without giving up on the game still looking good. We also cover the basic tweaks for anyone who just wants stable FPS from minute one.

⚠️ Known for: Grim Dawn is tremendously lightweight in normal zones, but it chokes during Crucible or Shattered Realm waves when dozens of summons, auras, and simultaneous particle effects pile up, a bottleneck that depends more on the CPU than the GPU.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +51% free FPS.

Damage Numbers / Combat Text

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: The community considers this the first mandatory tweak for any summoner or dense-AoE build.
+12% FPS

Floating damage numbers are one of the biggest culprits behind FPS drops in massive Crucible or Shattered Realm fights, especially with summoner or pet builds. Turning them off or limiting them to "Critical only" frees up a noticeable amount of CPU without affecting actual combat at all.

Particle Density

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Strong consensus: it's the setting with the best FPS-gained-to-visual-loss ratio in the game.
+15% FPS

This slider directly controls how many particle effects render per spell, aura, or explosion, and it's the setting with the most real impact during Crucible hordes. Dropping it from Ultra to Medium drastically cuts CPU load in fights with multiple enemy summoners.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended almost universally, except for screenshots or relaxed exploration sessions.
+8% FPS

Grim Dawn's dynamic shadows don't add much in the game's typical zoomed-out isometric view, but they do eat rendering time in areas with lots of torches or fire effects. Dropping them to Low is practically unnoticeable during combat.

V-Sync

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: The community prefers an external FPS cap (RivaTuner) over the game's native V-Sync.
+10% FPS

V-Sync introduces an artificial cap and can add perceptible input lag in an ARPG where dodge responsiveness is key. Disabling it and letting the framerate fluctuate freely avoids the typical stutter when the game dips below the refresh rate.

Anti-Aliasing

Recommended: FXAA · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Enough for most players; sharpness purists prefer enabling it only on 1440p displays or higher.

Grim Dawn's native AA isn't especially demanding, but on tuned-down machines every bit counts. FXAA offers a good balance between clean edges and performance cost compared to more aggressive options.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Quality

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Recommended to leave on High unless you're on hardware with less than 4GB of VRAM.

Grim Dawn has relatively modest textures by today's standards, so almost any GPU with 4GB of VRAM or more can keep them on High with no real penalty.

Depth of Field

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Turned off in almost every community guide, near-unanimously.
+5% FPS

Depth of field adds a constant post-processing cost that contributes nothing gameplay-wise in a fixed isometric camera; many players also find it annoying when trying to read loot scattered on the ground.

Bloom

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended for summoner and caster builds for readability, on top of the performance gain.
+3% FPS

Bloom in Grim Dawn spikes with fire spells, lightning, and endgame build auras, adding another layer of post-processing on top of scenes already saturated with particles. Dropping it to Low reduces that accumulated cost.

Resolution Scale

Recommended: 100 · Visual impact: High · Consensus: Only recommended as a last resort on systems with a very limited CPU.
+18% FPS

Lowering the internal resolution scale is the last-resort option when neither particles nor damage numbers are enough, typically on very old CPUs during massive Crucible waves.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Enable the FPS cap in the NVIDIA control panel instead of the game's V-Sync to avoid input lag in melee combat.
  • •Grim Dawn barely uses VRAM, so even an RTX 3050 is more than enough for 1080p Ultra with no graphical bottlenecks.
  • •NVIDIA's Low Latency (Ultra) mode especially helps in Crucible when the CPU saturates and frametime becomes irregular.

AMD

  • •Radeon Chill can introduce noticeable micro-stutter during Crucible's particle spikes; it's recommended to disable it specifically for this game.
  • •Any mid-range AMD GPU from the last 6-7 years runs Grim Dawn at Ultra 1080p/1440p effortlessly.
  • •Enable Radeon Anti-Lag to offset the micro-stutters caused by CPU load during dense enemy waves.

Sistema

  • •The CPU matters more than the GPU in this game: a processor with strong single-thread performance makes more of a difference in Shattered Realm than a more powerful GPU.
  • •Installing the game on an SSD noticeably reduces stutter when entering new zones or loading enemy waves in Crucible.
  • •Close third-party overlays during multiplayer sessions with several summoners, since they add CPU overhead exactly where you can least afford it.

FPS drop during Crucible waves with multiple summoners

When several players use pet builds or persistent auras in Crucible, the number of active entities and effects can spike CPU usage and cause framerate drops below 30 FPS even on powerful systems.

Microstutter when entering Shattered Realm

The procedural generation of Shattered Realm rooms can cause a small pause or stutter when loading each level, more noticeable on mechanical hard drives than on SSDs.

Accumulated area effects with DoT-stacking builds

Builds centered on poison, bleed, or burn that stack multiple damage sources generate a volume of status-effect particles that can saturate the CPU during long fights against bosses or hordes.

Why does my FPS drop in Crucible even though my PC is powerful?▾
Because the bottleneck in those waves is the CPU processing dozens of simultaneous entities, auras, and particles, not your GPU's power. Lowering Particle Density and disabling Combat Text usually recovers most of the lost FPS.
Does Grim Dawn have DLSS or FSR?▾
No. It's a proprietary engine derived from the 2016 Titan Quest engine, with no support for modern upscaling technologies.
Which setting gives the most FPS with the least visual loss?▾
Particle Density on Medium and disabling Damage Numbers are, by far, the two settings with the best ratio of FPS gained to visual impact lost.
Do I need a powerful GPU to play Grim Dawn?▾
No. The game is very light graphically and practically any GPU from the last 8-10 years runs it at Ultra 1080p without issue.
