How to improve FPS in Dead Space Remake (PC)

Dead Space Remake is Motive Studio's take on the 2008 horror classic, rebuilt on Frostbite, the engine EA usually reserves for shooters like Battlefield. It's an unusual choice for a survival horror, but it lets Motive show off volumetric lighting and dismemberment physics that few engines match. Its signature feature is the uninterrupted single take: there are no loading screens or cuts when changing zones on the USG Ishimura, which forces the engine to keep much more level data loaded simultaneously than a conventional linear game. On top of that, combat centers on chopping up necromorphs with the Plasma Cutter, generating blood and viscera effects that get very demanding in scenes with lots on screen. This guide helps you balance visual fidelity and stable performance without sacrificing the tension that makes the game great.

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Almost unanimous to turn it off; the community agrees it only takes away sharpness without adding anything to the game's tension.
+3% FPS

Motion blur in Dead Space Remake adds a post-processing layer that blurs fast camera turns, something very common when dodging necromorphs in tight spaces. Disabling it barely affects overall looks since volumetric lighting already provides plenty of atmosphere. It's a free gain that also improves visual clarity in combat.

Volumetric Lighting

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: High · Consensus: The community recommends Medium as the sweet spot; High or Ultra only for high-end GPUs with plenty of headroom.

Volumetric lighting is the centerpiece of this remake's visuals: the light beams cutting through steam and dust on the Ishimura are responsible for much of the game's oppressive atmosphere. However, on Ultra the GPU cost skyrockets especially in zero-gravity zones with suspended particles. Medium keeps the recognizable effect without compromising smoothness in the densest sections.

Texture Quality / Streaming Pool

Recommended: High · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended to tune based on available VRAM; with 6GB or less, High is more stable than Ultra for avoiding stutter.

With no loading screens between zones, texture streaming works continuously to keep the whole ship's detail loaded in memory, making the VRAM pool size more decisive here than in other games. Dropping from Ultra to High frees up VRAM with barely any noticeable difference at normal play distances, avoiding the typical popping and microstutter of saturated streaming.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Dropping from Ultra to Medium or High is one of the community's most recommended optimizations for gaining stability.

Dynamic shadows are essential to the game's scare design, since necromorphs usually first appear as silhouettes in ventilation ducts. Even so, on Ultra real-time shadow rendering with multiple light sources (flashlight, sparks, plasma cutter) hurts performance a lot. Medium keeps silhouette readability without that extra cost.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Medium is recommended for most setups; only very powerful GPUs see a real difference on Ultra.

Screen space reflections are most noticeable on the ship's metallic floors and wet surfaces, a very characteristic visual trait of Frostbite's look. On Ultra the cost grows considerably in highly reflective interiors like the infirmary or engine room, while on Medium the effect stays convincing from most camera angles.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS 2

Added via patch after launch, DLSS 2 is the best option on RTX GPUs: in Balanced or Quality mode it recovers a notable performance margin in the zones most loaded with particles and steam without visibly degrading the Ishimura's texture detail.

AMD FSR 2

+28% FPS

Also added via a post-launch update, FSR 2 works on any GPU and offers a solid gain, though with somewhat more noticeable ghosting on dismemberment effects and zero-gravity particles compared to DLSS.

NVIDIA

  • •Enable DLSS in Quality mode if you have an RTX 20 series or above; the game integrates it natively without noticeable artifacts after the patches.
  • •The latest Game Ready drivers usually include Frostbite-specific profiles that improve frametime stability during zero-gravity sequences.
  • •If your VRAM is 8GB or less, avoid combining Ultra textures with ray tracing (where available), since both compete for the same streaming pool.

AMD

  • •FSR 2 in Quality mode is the best performance-to-quality ratio on Radeon cards; avoid Performance mode except at 1440p or higher.
