How to improve FPS in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (PC)

Black Ops 6 runs on an evolved version of the IW engine that shares its technical base with Warzone, but here the goal is different: in competitive multiplayer what matters is a high, stable framerate with minimal input latency, not maximizing visual detail. The campaign and Zombies are more graphically demanding and tolerate a more balanced setup better. This guide prioritizes the 144+ stable FPS competitive players are after, with specific notes for when things apply differently to the campaign.

⚠️ Known for: Aggressive shader compilation and texture streaming: the first few minutes after every major update (new season or patch) usually bring micro-stutter until the shader cache regenerates, and on cards with low VRAM (6-8GB) texture streaming on large Zombies or campaign maps can cause occasional framerate drops and visible pop-in.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)

Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +33% free FPS.

Render Resolution

Recommended: 90-100 · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: The competitive community agrees on leaving it at 90-95% on 1440p/4K displays; at 1080p many prefer 100% and lowering other settings instead.
+12% FPS

The render resolution slider is the most direct control over GPU cost. Dropping it a few points below 100% costs little perceived sharpness but frees up FPS almost linearly, more predictable than tweaking individual settings.

Shadow Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Nearly unanimous among competitive players: shadows on Low or even Lowest, since it also reduces the "visual noise" that makes spotting enemies harder.
+8% FPS

High-resolution dynamic shadows are among the IW engine's most expensive settings in maps with heavy vegetation or complex structures. Lowering them barely affects environment readability in fast combat.

Volumetric Quality (Lighting/Fog)

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Standard recommendation in competitive guides: turn off volumetrics for both FPS and visual clarity in combat.
+6% FPS

Volumetric lighting and dynamic fog add extra render passes, especially in outdoor scenarios. Disabling it also improves visibility in areas with grenade smoke.

Screen Space Reflections

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Broad consensus: turn it off in multiplayer; in the campaign some players leave it on Low for aesthetics.
+5% FPS

Screen-space reflections mostly affect wet floors, glass, and puddles — elements that offer no useful information in combat. Their GPU cost doesn't pay off for the visual impact in fast-paced play.

Motion Blur

Recommended: Off · Visual impact: Imperceptible · Consensus: Turned off by 95%+ of the competitive community; the FPS savings are minimal but the clarity improvement is real.
+2% FPS

Doesn't carry a real GPU load but introduces blur during fast turns, reducing clarity when tracking moving enemies. Practically every competitive shooter recommends disabling it.

2. Medium impact settings

Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.

Texture Resolution

Recommended: Normal · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Adjust based on available VRAM rather than aesthetic preference: the unwritten rule is "high textures if you have VRAM to spare, otherwise lower it without hesitation."
+4% FPS

On GPUs with 8GB of VRAM or less, dropping from High to Normal noticeably reduces texture streaming and avoids paging hitches on large maps. On cards with 12GB+ you can keep it on High with no penalty.

Shader Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Performance guides agree it's one of the most cost-effective sliders to lower, along with shadows.
+7% FPS

Controls the complexity of material shaders and surface effects. It's one of the settings with the biggest measured FPS impact on the IW engine, more than the name suggests.

Detail/LOD Quality

Recommended: Medium · Visual impact: Medium · Consensus: Recommended on Medium for multiplayer; in campaign/Zombies many raise it to High for visual immersion.
+5% FPS

Determines how far models and terrain detail load at full resolution. Dropping it to Medium keeps distant targets readable without paying the full cost of rendering unnecessary detail.

Ambient Occlusion

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: A common secondary setting after the five quick wins; not a priority, but it adds extra FPS with no noticeable sacrifice.
+3% FPS

Generates contact shading in corners and gaps. Its cost isn't huge but adds up alongside other post-processing effects, and its visual impact in combat is minimal.

Particle Quality

Recommended: Low · Visual impact: Low · Consensus: Lowering to Low is common in competitive configurations and also helps maintain visibility during intense firefights.
+4% FPS

Explosions, smoke, and gunfire effects generate GPU load proportional to the number of simultaneous particles, especially notable in Zombies with large hordes on screen.

3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)

The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

NVIDIA DLSS (Super Resolution)

+30% FPS

Available in Balanced or Performance mode for RTX. On mid-range GPUs like the RTX 4060 it hits high framerates while keeping a clean image, though in fast shooters some players prefer native resolution rendered lower to minimize any reconstruction artifacts on distant targets.

AMD FSR

+22% FPS

Compatible with any GPU, useful on AMD or Intel systems without DLSS access. Image quality is somewhat behind DLSS in fast motion, so Quality mode is usually the most balanced option to avoid losing definition while aiming.

Intel XeSS

+20% FPS

A good alternative on Intel Arc GPUs, also functional on NVIDIA/AMD as a fallback. Performance somewhat behind DLSS at the same mode, but better than FSR1 in image stability during motion.

NVIDIA Reflex

+0% FPS

Adds no FPS but is the single most important setting for competitive players: it reduces input latency between clicking and the on-screen action by better syncing CPU and GPU. Recommended to always enable in multiplayer, along with Boost on systems with thermal headroom.

4. Tips by GPU

NVIDIA

  • •Use the most recent Game Ready driver tied to the current season launch; Black Ops 6 gets frequent content patches that sometimes need an updated driver to avoid shader stutter.
  • •Enable Reflex + Boost from within the game rather than only forcing it from the NVIDIA panel, since the game's native implementation usually offers better syncing.
  • •On RTX 40 series, DLSS 3 Frame Generation isn't recommended in competitive multiplayer due to added latency; save it for campaign or Zombies if you want visual smoothness over reactivity.

AMD

  • •The IW engine is tuned around RDNA architecture (a console inheritance), which usually translates into above-average performance on Radeon GPUs compared to equivalent NVIDIA cards at the same price point.
  • •Enable Anti-Lag (or Anti-Lag+ if your GPU supports it) from Adrenalin as an equivalent to Reflex to reduce input lag in multiplayer.
  • •Check that Smart Access Memory is active on compatible motherboards, as it adds a consistent few extra FPS on the IW engine.

Sistema

  • •Install the game on an SSD (NVMe preferred): texture streaming and large Zombies maps hit mechanical drives hard with pop-in and loading hitches.
  • •Close third-party overlays (Discord, GeForce Experience, capture tools) you don't need: the IW engine is sensitive to CPU thread overload on systems with fewer cores.
  • •If you notice micro-stutter after a season update, let the game finish precompiling shaders over your first couple of matches before judging real performance.

5. Known game issues

Stutter after season updates

Every major patch (new season or content update) forces a shader cache recompile, causing intermittent micro-stutter during the first few matches. It usually resolves itself after 10-15 minutes of play.

High VRAM usage with high textures

With Texture Resolution on High/Extra and GPUs with 8GB or less, it's common to see framerate drops from VRAM paging on large Zombies maps or in campaign, especially with Ray Tracing enabled.

Single-core CPU usage spikes

On systems with older CPUs (4 cores or fewer), the engine can saturate a main thread during fights with many players/enemies on screen, causing occasional drops independent of the GPU.

Is Ray Tracing worth enabling in Black Ops 6?▾
Not in competitive multiplayer: the FPS cost doesn't pay off for a visual improvement barely noticeable in fast matches. In campaign or Zombies, with a high-end GPU and FPS to spare, it does add more believable reflections and lighting.
What's different about optimizing Black Ops 6 versus Warzone if they share an engine?▾
The technical base is similar, but Black Ops 6 multiplayer is played on much smaller maps with shorter matches, so texture streaming and open-world loading matter less. Warzone, being a battle royale with a huge map, is more demanding on CPU and memory management due to the number of simultaneous players and objects.
Why does my FPS suddenly drop mid-firefight even though the rest of the match runs smoothly?▾
It's usually VRAM saturation from texture streaming and simultaneous particle effects (explosions, smoke, gunfire). Lowering Texture Resolution and Particle Quality usually stabilizes these spikes without sacrificing much average FPS.
Is it better to use DLSS/FSR or just lower render resolution?▾
For players very sensitive to input latency, native rendering with reduced Render Resolution (85-90%) minimizes any variation introduced by upscaling. For those prioritizing more FPS with good image quality, DLSS in Quality or Balanced mode is the most efficient option on NVIDIA GPUs.
