
How to improve FPS in Arma 3 (PC)
Arma 3 runs on Real Virtuality 4, a 2013 engine designed for large-scale military simulation, not for squeezing modern GPUs. Its real bottleneck is the CPU: procedural terrain, AI, vehicle physics, and above all the SQF scripting of missions and mods run largely on a single thread. Community servers like Antistasi, King of the Hill, or Exile add layers of scripts that can tank the framerate even if you have an RTX 4090 underneath. This guide focuses on getting the most out of your single-thread CPU, tuning the graphics parameters that do depend on GPU/VRAM (shadows, vegetation, view distance), and understanding why "more GPU" is almost never the answer in Arma 3.

1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +51% free FPS.
Object Detail
Controls how many static objects (rocks, fences, debris) render based on distance. On Ultra it generates CPU spikes processing unnecessary geometry in the background of the map.
Shadow Quality
Dynamic shadows from vegetation and units are expensive in RV4 because they're constantly recalculated with AI on the move. Lowering them frees up both CPU and GPU.
View Distance (terrain)
Terrain render distance is the most CPU-expensive setting on large maps like Tanoa or Livonia. Dropping from default values of 2500-5000 to 1600-2000 drastically reduces terrain streaming work.
Object View Distance
Separate from the terrain view distance, this controls how far objects and vegetation load. Keeping it somewhat below the general view distance avoids aggressive pop-in while saving CPU.
PIP (Picture in Picture)
Vehicle rearview mirrors and drone screens render a full second scene in real time. Disabling them is pure savings with almost no gameplay cost outside of missions heavily focused on vehicles.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Terrain Detail
Affects terrain mesh density and its tessellation in nearby areas. On maps with a lot of relief like Tanoa it impacts CPU more than expected.
Vegetation View Distance
Wooded maps like Tanoa or Livonia suffer a lot from vegetation density rendered at distance. Reducing it helps especially in combat in rural areas.
Anti-Aliasing
RV4's AA (especially high supersampling values) is expensive on GPU without adding much given the game's visual style. FXAA gives a decent result at minimal cost.
Texture Quality
Being a 2013 game, textures on High already use little VRAM compared to modern games, so dropping from Ultra to High is barely noticeable visually but frees up some memory bandwidth.
HDR Quality
High HDR in RV4 adds extra post-processing passes that in scenes with lots of vegetation and dynamic light can cost more than they visually add.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.

+0% FPSArma 3 (2013) doesn't support DLSS, FSR, or XeSS natively: the Real Virtuality 4 engine predates these technologies and Bohemia has never implemented them. Any mod or "hack" promising to enable them isn't officially supported and can cause stability issues or be detected as an unauthorized modification on BattlEye-protected servers.
Resolution Scale (in-game)
+10% FPSThe real alternative in Arma 3 is the game's own Resolution Scale slider, which renders below your native resolution and scales with a simple filter. It's not as clean as DLSS/FSR but it's the only built-in way to gain FPS by reducing render load, especially useful at 1440p/4K where the GPU does start to weigh more.
4. Tips by GPU
NVIDIA
- •Enable Low Latency Mode set to "Ultra" from the NVIDIA panel to reduce input lag in long-range combat, where Arma 3 is especially sensitive.
- •Don't expect large gains from moving up a GPU tier: in Antistasi or Zeus with heavy AI, an RTX 3060 and an RTX 4080 can give almost identical FPS because the limit is the CPU.
- •If you have VRAM to spare (8GB+), raise Texture Quality and Object Detail without worry: that's not where you'll lose FPS in this game.
AMD
- •On Ryzen CPUs, check that Windows' power mode is set to "Best performance" or "Balanced": Arma 3 heavily penalizes frequency jumps in an engine so dependent on a single thread.
- •Disable Adrenalin overlays (Radeon Chill, Enhanced Sync) during competitive matches: they can introduce perceptible microstutter when the server FPS is already low to begin with.
- •With Radeon GPUs, keep Anti-Lag enabled to compensate for input lag in heavy-AI scenarios where frametime is irregular.

- •Prioritize core frequency (GHz) over core count when choosing a CPU: a high-clocked i5/Ryzen 5 outperforms an i9/Ryzen 9 with more cores but similar clock in Arma 3.
- •Install the game on an SSD (preferably NVMe): terrain and object streaming on large maps like Tanoa causes noticeable stutter on mechanical drives.
- •Close non-essential mods before playing on community servers: every mod adds SQF scripting overhead that directly adds to the CPU bottleneck, even purely cosmetic mods.

Low server FPS in dynamic missions (Antistasi, Zeus, Exile)
When server-managed AI exceeds a certain number of active units, the "server FPS" (distinct from client FPS) plummets and affects all players equally, without upgrading graphics hardware helping. It's a structural limit of RV4's SQF scripting and AI simulation, not a one-off bug.
Poor use of multiple cores
Although Bohemia added partial multithread support (rendering on a separate thread, partially parallelized terrain calculation), game logic, scripts, and physics still mostly depend on a main thread. The result is that a modern 6-core rarely exceeds 30-40% total usage while one core hits 100%.
Memory leak in long sessions with many mods
In matches or servers running for several hours with large mod lists, it's a long-documented problem that RAM usage grows progressively until it causes stutter or cumulative FPS drops, forcing periodic client restarts.
