How to improve FPS in STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl (PC)
STALKER 2 launched in November 2024 as one of the most problematic PC releases in recent years, built on Unreal Engine 5. A combination of Lumen, Nanite, and an extremely CPU-heavy NPC AI system created a perfect storm of stuttering, frame rate drops, and crashes. Multiple patches have improved the situation, but it still requires careful configuration to run well.
This is what you'd gain with a NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti
Calculations based on our FPS model combined with the % gain of each setting (measured in public benchmarks). Calculate your exact FPS with your own hardware →
1. Quick wins (no visual loss)
Start here. Each one adds a little, but together they give +41% free FPS.
Lumen Global Illumination
As with all UE5 games running Lumen, switching from Hardware GI to Screen Space is the highest-impact setting change. In STALKER 2 this is even more critical given the game's existing performance problems.
Motion Blur
Motion blur in STALKER 2 is moderate but unnecessary given the game's already demanding performance profile.
Anti-Aliasing
UE5's native TAA produces ghosting. TSR or DLSS are superior in quality and performance. Enable DLSS/FSR before any other setting change.
Depth of Field
DoF has a visible cost in STALKER 2. Off is recommended on mid-range hardware.
2. Medium impact settings
Here's where most of the FPS is. Minor visual impact, major performance impact.
Shadows
Shadows in STALKER 2 are one of the largest GPU costs. Low-Medium delivers a significant FPS jump with acceptable visual loss in a game with such dense atmosphere.
Nanite Details
Nanite detail at High/Ultra uses a lot of GPU. Low keeps the fundamental geometric quality with less processing overhead.
Draw Distance
Draw distance in STALKER 2 is especially costly due to the Zone's dense geometry. Medium is a good balance for this open-world game.
Global Illumination
Low GI sacrifices some depth in interiors but frees significant GPU. Combined with disabling Lumen, this is the game's biggest optimization combo.
Textures (con 8 GB VRAM)
STALKER 2 is very VRAM-hungry. With 8 GB, High textures can cause overflow. Medium is mandatory for 8 GB GPUs.
3. Upscaling (DLSS / FSR / XeSS)
The biggest gain in the game. Compatible with almost any modern GPU.
DLSS Quality (NVIDIA RTX 20-series y superior)
+28% FPSDLSS Quality is practically mandatory in STALKER 2 for mid-range hardware. Without upscaling, the game is brutally demanding.
FSR 3 Quality (AMD y NVIDIA GTX)
+23% FPSFSR 3 at Quality is the option for AMD. Delivers solid gains with acceptable visual quality in the Zone's dense vegetation.
DLSS / FSR Frame Generation (RTX 40 / RX 7900)
+70% FPSFrame Gen helps significantly in STALKER 2 because the base FPS is low. Combine with Screen Space GI + DLSS Quality for a smooth experience.
4. Tips by GPU
NVIDIA
- •DLSS Quality first, Screen Space GI second — these two changes together can double FPS in STALKER 2.
- •Frame Generation on RTX 40-series helps a lot in a game with such a low FPS baseline.
- •With an RTX 4060 Ti at 1080p Medium + DLSS Quality, expect 50-60 FPS. With Lumen active, the same card drops to 25-35 FPS.
- •Some users report better stability with DX12 on NVIDIA; try both APIs if you experience crashes.
AMD
- •FSR 3 Quality + Screen Space GI is the base configuration for AMD. Without these two changes, performance is inadequate.
- •Smart Access Memory (SAM) on in BIOS — gives a consistent bonus in UE5 titles.
- •With an RX 7700/7800 XT at 1080p Medium + FSR Quality, expect 45-55 FPS with Screen Space GI.
Intel
- •Arc B580 in STALKER 2 is challenging — the game has many DX12 stability issues that affect Arc more than other brands.
- •XeSS Quality with RT disabled is the best you can do on Arc hardware for this title.
- •Keep drivers very up to date: Intel's UE5 support has improved significantly since launch.
5. Known game issues
Massive stuttering in populated areas
Zalissya, Rostok, and other NPC hubs cause severe micro-stutters from CPU bottleneck and the AI system. There's no perfect fix — reducing Draw Distance and disabling Lumen helps. 32 GB RAM significantly reduces the problem.
Estado: Progressively improved since patch 1.1
Random crashes
The game crashes frequently, especially during zone transitions. Fix: verify file integrity in Steam, update GPU drivers, and disable GPU/RAM overclocking.
Estado: Improved in patch 1.2
Memory leaks in long sessions
After 2-3 hour sessions, RAM usage grows significantly. If you notice performance degradation, save and restart the game.
Shader compilation (UE5)
Like all UE5 games, it compiles shaders on first launch. The process in STALKER 2 is especially long (15-20 minutes). Don't force the game to start until it's complete.
